What are the responsibilities and job description for the SUPPORT COMPANION FOR AUTISTIC TEEN position at The Kenny Family?
Job Overview
This is not a traditional caregiving role.
We are seeking a compassionate, open-hearted person to build a genuine relationship with our daughter, Sara, while supporting her participation in community life, learning, communication, and personal interests.
Sara is a thoughtful, funny, non-speaking autistic teenager who communicates through typing. She loves learning, nature, music, science, dogs, and authentic connection. She experiences the world deeply and appreciates people who are willing to slow down, listen, and presume competence.
This role is about connection, companionship, and shared experiences. We are looking for someone who sees the person before the diagnosis and enjoys building meaningful relationships.
WHAT THE ROLE MIGHT LOOK LIKE
- Community outings around Martinez and the greater Bay Area
- Library visits, local events, and everyday adventures
- Creative projects, music, and exploration
- Supporting communication through typing (training provided to right candidate)
- Accompanying Sara to activities and classes
- Sharing conversation, laughter, and everyday life experiences
- Encouraging independence, confidence, and self-expression
WHO THRIVES HERE?
People from many backgrounds may be a great fit: educators, artists, therapists, college students, retirees, outdoor enthusiasts, spiritual seekers, photographers, musicians, or anyone who values authentic human connection and believes every person deserves to be heard.
You may be a great fit if you are:
- Kind, patient, and dependable
- Curious rather than judgmental
- Emotionally attuned and open-minded
- Comfortable thinking outside conventional boxes
- Interested in neurodiversity, communication, personal growth, education, creativity, or nature
- Willing to learn and build trust over time
EXPERIENCE
Experience with autism, AAC, education, therapy, or disability support is welcomed but not required. Training and guidance will be provided. The qualities we value most are warmth, reliability, and genuine curiosity about who Sara is as a person.
A background check and clean driving record is required.
SCHEDULE & COMPENSATION
This is a flexible part-time role, approximately 20–30 hours per month, with scheduling arranged around Sara's activities and your availability. Compensation is competitive and commensurate with experience — details shared upon inquiry.
