The Joy School is a K-8th-grade, nonsectarian, private-independent school for intellectually capable students with learning differences such as dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, expressive or receptive language disorder, social pragmatic disorder, anxiety, autism spectrum disorder (level 1), or executive functioning challenges.
Most students attend for three to five years before successfully transitioning to private or public schools without the need for continued intervention or special services.
Role Description
- Title: ELA Teacher (Middle School) Reports to: Middle School Principal • Plan and provide ELA instruction for two classes of up to eight students in grades 6th through 8th. • Contribute to a safe, supportive school environment for both students and parents by leading with compassion and integrity in all situations while at the same time maintaining appropriate professional boundaries • Meet professional obligations both in and out of the classroom, including but not limited to assigned duties, meetings, parent conferences, in-service training, and school events • Contribute to a positive faculty culture by building collaborative, collegial, and respectful relationships with colleagues and overtly supporting fellow teachers, administrators, and the board • Uphold professional standards of appearance, courtesy, responsiveness, discretion, punctuality, and attendance and demonstrate a high standard of personal character and conduct at all times • Demonstrate appropriate planning and preparation for instruction specifically adapted to the instructional needs of each student • Demonstrate skill at setting high, but not uniform, academic and behavioral standards and expectations for all students • Demonstrate through words and actions a genuine, believable commitment to the school, its mission, its students, its faculty and its leadership • Bachelor’s degree or higher required with teacher certification preferred • Three to five years of relative classroom experience required • Comfort in teaching a range of grade levels and content areas • Experience working with diverse learners • Knowledge of learning differences and the ability to differentiate instruction in the classroom based on those needs • Strong ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in written form • Analytical approach to curriculum, instructional methods, and students • Flexibility as it relates to classroom management, pacing of curriculum, and student expectations • Compassion for students, parents, and colleagues
