We are seeking a Genetic Counselor Manager will plan and administer outpatient prenatal genetic counseling services for the clinical department, collaborate with health care providers to establish standards of care for the specialty practices, and supervise the office staff, including other genetic counselors, genetic counselor assistant, and the clinic’s patient service coordinator, in addition to provision of clinical genetic counseling services. The genetic counselor will serve as the manager responsible for genetic counselor standards, regulatory compliance, and performance improvement activities of the clinic operation and its personnel.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Design, manage, and evaluate the systems through which patient care is delivered and maintain an efficient environment conducive to quality patient care.
  • Supervise all office staff, including completion of twice annual employee reviews.
  • Serve as hiring manager, as needed.
  • Serve as Departmental and Prenatal Genetics representative on administrative committees for laboratory testing, specimen flow/send outs, and for budget and financial matters as they may affect Prenatal Genetics in GYN/OB and various other departments for the University and Hospital.
  • Serve as a liaison to triage and provide assistance for issues and questions related to workflow and patient care from prenatal genetic counselors at other institutions, both outside and within [Howard County and Sibley] the Johns Hopkins system, and from personnel and providers in other Divisions (such as Reproductive Endocrinology, GYN Oncology, Family Planning) or Departments.
  • Mentor genetic counselors, supporting their career goals and advocating for promotion on the Genetic Counselor Career Ladder, as appropriate.
  • Provide genetic counseling to patients referred for a wide variety of indications, including maternal age, abnormal screening results, abnormal ultrasound findings, family history concerns, pregnancy loss, teratogenic exposures, and infertility.
  • Case preparation for the counseling session may include review of previous pertinent testing results, research regarding the condition of concern, and arranging for appropriate testing.
  • The genetic counselor will coordinate testing, which may include chorionic villus sampling, amniocentesis, ultrasound, and carrier screening, provide follow-up by contacting the patient and referring providers with test results, documentation of the counseling session and results of testing, and assisting with arrangements for additional consultations or testing.
  • Cases are presented in weekly conferences for management and student education.

In addition to responsibilities related to direct patient care, the genetic counselors have opportunities for participation in education via the provision of lectures to various student groups, other medical providers, and lay groups.

  • Additional teaching responsibilities include supervision of genetic counseling graduate students, fellows/residents in maternal-fetal medicine and medical genetics, and medical students and gynecology/obstetrics residents on elective rotations.
  • Collaboration in clinical research is encouraged. Opportunities exist for interaction with 25 additional counselors in other departments at this large, academic medical center.
  • A qualified candidate should have good case management skills. Communication with maternal-fetal medicine physicians, other medical specialists, referring obstetric providers, and various laboratories is required. Critical thinking and an independent work ethos can be rewarded with considerable autonomy in this work setting.

Supervising

  • 6 Genetic counselors, a genetic counselor assistant, a PSC, and supervises the work of students and residents.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree from a graduate program accredited by the American Board of Genetic Counseling.
  • ABGC Board certification required. Maryland license is required.
  • Two years of experience in prenatal/reproductive genetics.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience, and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond a high school diploma/graduation equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in specialty pediatric and adult genetics clinics.

Starting Salary Range: $75,100 - $131,700 Annually ($120,000 targeted; Commensurate w/exp.)
