Johns Hopkins University is seeking a Biosafety Cabinet Technician. This is an entry-level position for individuals with mechanical aptitude who are interested in learning to perform certification and testing of biological safety cabinets, clean benches, and other HEPA-filtered equipment. The department will provide training to become a biosafety cabinet certifier, including support for attending courses and professional meetings, and will cover the cost of certification through NSF International.

This position reports to the Director of Biosafety and facilitates maintenance and certification programs for biosafety cabinets, laminar air flow cabinets, and portable HEPA filters as part of the functions of the Biosafety Office. Assists with biosafety-related matters as stipulated by the Biosafety Officer.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Prepare equipment and materials for field certification work.
  • Assist with and progressively perform certification, repair, and decontamination of laminar airflow equipment in hospital and university environments, including biological safety cabinets, clean benches, and other HEPA-filtered systems.
  • Assist with and progressively perform equipment decontamination and troubleshooting.
  • Ensure compliance with standards such as NSF International / ANSI 49 and guidelines from Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and National Institutes of Health.
  • Follow safety protocols when working in laboratories and healthcare environments.
  • Provide basic customer support and communicate findings to supervisors and clients including support staff and research staff, faculty, and students.
  • Maintain tools, calibration equipment, and supplies.
  • File maintenance and certification reports in a prompt fashion.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or graduation equivalent.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond a high school diploma/graduation equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Industrial hygiene, laboratory, or safety-related experience is beneficial, but not required.
  • Experience working in laboratory or facilities environments.
  • Familiarity with biosafety cabinets or HVAC systems.
  • Interest in obtaining NSF certification.

Technical Qualifications And Specialized Certifications

  • Must be experienced and competent with using hand tools.
  • Must have some mechanical repair experience either professional or personal.
  • Computer skills, filing skills, telephone skills, mechanical troubleshooting skills, independent fieldwork skills.
  • Safety compliance awareness.
  • Must be physically able to wear personal protective equipment, especially respiratory protection during performance of job duties.
  • Must be physically able to transport wheeled equipment weighing up to approximately 350 pounds.
  • Must be available for emergency response.

Starting Salary Range: $18.20 - $33.90 HRLY (Commensurate w/exp.)
