The John Thomas Dye School, an independent K-6 school located in Los Angeles, is currently seeking a full-time Elementary Science Teacher. JOB SUMMARY:  The Elementary Science Teacher is a member of JTD’s inSTED department (Innovation, Science, Technology, Engineering & Design) and plays a key role in delivering an interdisciplinary, inquiry-driven science program. This teacher designs and facilitates engaging learning experiences that build students’ scientific understanding, curiosity, and problem-solving skills while fostering best practices in science, engineering, and design. Science classes are co-taught, and technology classes are supported by a third educator, a Technology Integration Specialist, allowing for intentional integration of scientific thinking, design processes, and technology. 


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:


Science Specialist:

  • Plan and implement an enriched, challenging, and developmentally appropriate integrated curriculum including science, technology, engineering, and design in collaboration with inSTED Team
  • Design and deliver student-centered, inquiry-based learning experiences that foster curiosity, problem-solving, and innovation.
  • Demonstrate a strong understanding  of the connections between technology, engineering, science, and other disciplines.  
  • Use formative and summative assessments, benchmarks, and student work to guide instructional planning and support student growth.
  • Maintain awareness of best practices in science education and educational technology


Co-Teaching:

  • Work in partnership with other inSTED co-teachers and K-6 Technology Integration Specialist to plan, teach, and reflect on instruction. 
  • Model effective co-teaching practices, including shared responsibility for lesson design, instructional delivery, student engagement, and use of technology and digital tools.
  • Utilize best instructional practices, methods, materials, and technology
  • Hold students to high standards while differentiating instruction to meet diverse learning needs
  • Demonstrate a repertoire of effective and engaging instructional strategies that meet the needs of all students
  • Communicate regularly with co-teachers about student progress in order to adjust planning and instruction
  • Communicate effectively and professionally with students, parents, colleagues, and administrators. 
  • Attend all department, curricular, and faculty meetings


Classroom Environment 

  • Create and maintain a positive, inclusive, and physically safe learning environment.
  • Implement developmentally appropriate classroom management strategies that support engagement, independence, and collaboration.
  • Support students’ academic and social-emotional development, including implementing  learning plans or student success plans as needed.


Professional Learning 

  •  Engage in ongoing professional growth by seeking out and participating in professional development opportunities.
  • Stay current with  instructional research  and best practices in Science Education 


Professional Responsibilities 

  • Model professional and ethical behavior  and 5C’s behavior (Caring, Consideration,Common Sense, Cooperation, and Courtesy) when interacting with students, parents, and colleagues 
  • Exercise excellent writing skills to communicate with colleagues, students, and families including the production of detailed narratives regarding student progress
  • Collaborate and communicate effectively with students, parents, administration, staff, and if applicable, outside professionals 
  • Participate in the overall care of students through duties such as morning carpool, recess supervision, and afternoon carpool
  • Participate in parent-teacher conferences, Back to School Night, parent nights, Open House, admissions events, and other events outside contractual hours at the request of the administration 
  • Support one or more Upper School clubs or activities
  • Other duties as assigned by the Upper School Head or Head of School


SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE and QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Science, Technology, education, or related field
  • Master’s Degree or Credential in Science, Technology, STEAM, or education preferred
  • Minimum of 2-3 years of classroom teaching experience, preferably in an independent school setting
  • Strong understanding of Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) 
  • Deep knowledge of content standards, effective instructional strategies, and assessment-informed  instruction
  • Proficiency with Google Workspace  for Education 
  • Strong understanding of academic, social, and emotional development of children
  • Strong understanding and use of multiple forms of assessment to inform instruction
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team

JTD is hiring an exempt, full-time, faculty staff position. The staff salary range is determined by years of experience and education with a range from $62,000 to $120,000.
