Position Summary
The Heavy-Duty Trailer Mechanic is responsible for inspecting, diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining a wide variety of commercial trailers to ensure safe and efficient operation. This position requires strong mechanical aptitude, troubleshooting skills, and the ability to perform preventative maintenance and major repairs on heavy-duty tank trailers.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform inspections, diagnostics, repairs, and preventative maintenance on heavy-duty trailers.
- Repair and replace trailer components, including suspension systems, brakes, axles, wheel bearings, hubs, landing gear, and air systems.
- Diagnose and repair electrical systems, lighting, wiring, ABS systems, and overfill prevention systems.
- Perform welding, fabrication, and structural repairs on trailer frames and components.
- Conduct DOT inspections and ensure compliance with all federal, state, and company safety regulations.
- Troubleshoot air leaks, brake performance issues, and suspension-related problems.
- Maintain accurate service records, repair orders, and inspection reports.
- Operate shop equipment, diagnostic tools, welding equipment, and lifting devices safely.
- Keep work areas clean, organized, and compliant with safety standards.
- Communicate repair recommendations and equipment status to supervisors.
Qualifications
Required
- High school diploma or GED.
- Minimum of 2 years of heavy-duty trailer repair experience.
- Strong knowledge of air brake systems, suspension systems, electrical systems, and trailer structures.
- Ability to read and interpret service manuals, schematics, and repair documentation.
- Valid driver's license.
- Ability to lift up to 75 pounds and work in various weather conditions and shop environments.
Preferred
- Technical or vocational training in trailer repair or a related field.
- DOT inspection certification.
- Welding certification or demonstrated welding experience.
