School Custodial Specialist
Location: The Ivy School Portland, OR
Grade Levels: K-8 (Elementary & Middle School)
Position Type: Full-Time, 40 hours/week, Monday–Friday
Position Overview
We are seeking a dedicated, detail-oriented Full-Time School Custodial Specialist to maintain a
clean, safe, and beautiful learning environment for our K-8 community. In alignment with
Montessori principles, our ideal candidate understands that the physical environment plays a
vital role in a child’s development. This position focuses not only on deep sanitation and safety
but also on preserving the order, beauty, and harmony of our classrooms and common spaces.
Key Responsibilities
Montessori Classroom Care & Order
● Preserve Environment Harmony: Respectfully navigate classrooms to dust, clean, and
vacuum without disrupting carefully arranged Montessori materials and shelves.
● Collaborative Upkeep: Work occasional midday blocks to clean tables and common
areas, sometimes modeling community care alongside elementary and middle school
students who participate in environmental upkeep.
● Child-Safe Practices: Exclusively utilize non-toxic, eco-friendly, and green certified
cleaning agents during school hours to ensure a chemical-free environment for
developing children.
Daily Custodial & Sanitation Duties
● Sanitation: Deeply clean and disinfect K-8 restrooms, the cafeteria, and common
high-touch areas (doorknobs, handrails, drinking fountains) daily.
● Floor Care: Sweep, mop, and vacuum all classrooms, administrative offices, and
hallways. Perform periodic seasonal floor care (shampooing rugs, deep cleaning hard
floors).
● Waste Management: Empty all classroom, office, and cafeteria trash, recycling, and
compost bins regularly.
● Kitchen / Cafeteria: Provide support for Kitchen staff as needed, and assist with
cafeteria set-up, breakdown, and clean up.
Facility Maintenance & Campus Safety
● Minor Repairs: Identify and execute basic repairs (e.g., replacing light bulbs, tightening
furniture fixtures, clearing minor clogs) and log major maintenance requests.
● Grounds & Weather Readiness: Keep building entrances, walkways, and play spaces free
of debris. Manage leaves, ice, or snow removal during classic Pacific Northwest weather
shifts to ensure safe campus access.
● Security & Event Support: Assist with the setups and breakdowns of school events,
community meetings, and seasonal celebrations. Secure the building at the end of the
shift (checking locks, windows, and alarms).
Requirements & Qualifications
● Experience: Minimum of 1–2 years of commercial cleaning/maintenance or school
Custodial experience preferred. A background or interest in a Montessori or
student-centered environment is a major plus.
● Physical Capabilities: Ability to stand and walk for extended periods, bend, kneel to
clean low surfaces, work from ladder, and safely lift up to 50 pounds.
● Oregon Compliance & Background: Must successfully pass a State Back Ground check
before employment begins.
● Required Certifications: Must be willing to complete standard school safety training
(Recognizing & Reporting Child Abuse and Neglect).
Pay: $22.00 per hour
