A day in the life…
Wondering what a day in the life of a Phlebotomist/Lab Assistant at The Iowa Clinic might look like?
- Arrive at work in the morning – no night shifts here!
- Collects, processes and stores patient samples as per protocol and safety guidelines.
- Performs patient testing within specified timelines.
- Maintains a clean, safe work environment.
- Potential to move up to helping maintain the equipment, ensuring that calibration and maintenance are completed with appropriate time frames.

Qualifications
- A desire to find a meaningful, fulfilling career
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- One year laboratory experience
- Demonstrates ability to consistently meet work schedule demands in the clinic.

Obtains adequate blood specimens from patients using appropriate specimen collection and handling procedures.
- Labels all specimens in accordance with clinical laboratory standards and Clinic policies and procedures
- Prepares specimens for delivery or delivers to appropriate laboratory areas.

Within scope of training, performs laboratory testing utilizing laboratory equipment in accordance with Clinic policies/procedures and manufacturer guidelines.

Performs computer functions to support collection and processing of specimens.

Maintains awareness of own safety in carrying out duties and responsibilities. Adheres to universal precautions and infection control policies and procedures.
- Assumes accountability for enhancing own knowledge through workshops, in-services, etc.
