What are the responsibilities and job description for the Volunteer: Copy Editor for Website and Donor Communications position at The International Girls Academy?
This is a volunteer opportunity provided by Taproot Foundation, a nonprofit creating social change through pro bono connections.
We want to create a polished, consistent set of donor- and community-facing written materials for The International Girls Academy (IGA) that clearly communicate who we are, what we do, and the impact our programs have for girls and young women. Specifically, we’re seeking a volunteer editor to help us strengthen and finalize content that will be used across our website and digital learning/program materials—ensuring it is clear, compelling, and aligned with our brand voice. IGA is looking for a skilled volunteer editor to support a short-term content editing project (2–5 hours/week for a limited number of weeks). The volunteer would help us: - Edit and refine existing copy for clarity, flow, grammar, and readability (light-to-moderate substantive editing). - Align tone and voice across multiple documents so our messaging feels consistent (warm, empowering, mission-driven, professional). - Improve structure and scannability (headings, transitions, shortening where needed, stronger calls-to-action). - Ensure content is audience-appropriate for key stakeholders (parents/guardians, partners, funders, volunteers, and program participants). - Create a simple editorial style guide (1–2 pages) that captures our voice, preferred terminology, capitalization, and “do/don’t” usage so future writing stays consistent. - Help prioritize and sequence deliverables so we can make steady progress each week. Examples of content we expect to include (depending on volunteer capacity and final scope): - Website page copy (About, Programs, Impact, Get Involved, Partnerships) - Program descriptions and module introductions for digital learning content - Short organization overview / messaging boilerplate for proposals and outreach We’ll provide drafts and background context; the volunteer’s role is to elevate and finalize what we already have so it is publication-ready.
IGA’s mission is to empower girls through leadership development, entrepreneurship, STEM learning, and culturally grounded principles that help them thrive academically, socially, and economically. Strong, consistent messaging is essential to growing that impact. This editing project will support our mission by helping IGA: - Reach more girls and families by making our programs easier to understand and more compelling to join. - Strengthen credibility with funders and partners through clear, professional, outcomes-focused content that communicates impact. - Increase volunteer and community engagement with stronger calls-to-action and a story that resonates. - Scale our programming and digital learning efforts by ensuring our curriculum and module content is accessible, consistent, and ready to publish. Ultimately, the volunteer editor’s support will help IGA communicate our value more powerfully—leading to stronger participation, deeper partnerships, and increased resources to serve girls and young women in our community.
We are prepared to be a strong pro bono partner and will set the volunteer up for success by: - Confirming internal ownership and buy-in: Our leadership is aligned on the need to standardize and strengthen IGA’s written messaging. - Providing organized materials up front: We will share all existing drafts, links, and source documents in a single workspace/folder, with clear notes on what is “most important” and what is “nice to have.” - Defining a clear scope weekly milestones: In week 1, we’ll align on priorities, target audiences, and voice/tone, then move through a structured editing schedule. - Offering fast feedback and decisions: We will commit to timely review/approval so edits don’t stall. - Designating one primary point of contact: The volunteer will have one consistent partner for questions, review cycles, and approvals. - Implementing outcomes immediately: Edited content will be incorporated directly into our website updates and our digital learning/program materials as soon as it is finalized, so the work has immediate real-world impact.
