Learning Specialist (Part-Time / Bilingual Spanish)

Join Port Discovery's new initiative, the At Play Learning Institute (APLI). Our mission is to engage caregivers and children with innovative, play-based educational experiences and programs. As a part-time Learning Specialist, you will play a vital role in community outreach by facilitating informal interactions, structured activities, and workshops both at the Museum and in partner sites.

Our part-time Learning Specialist position is primarily responsible for performing an essential role in Port Discovery's community outreach. This position requires Spanish fluency to support bilingual programming, outreach, and materials development. You'll work closely with the APLI Associate Director and receive training on the importance of play for families and community partners.

Compensation: $20.00 per hour.

Schedule:

• Typical shifts: 4–6 hours, Monday–Friday
• Occasional evenings/weekends, communicated in advance
• Average of 24 hours/week, with potential for up to 29 hours/week

Primary Responsibilities:

Co-facilitate Communities At Play sessions, including:

• Packing and transporting materials to/from off-site locations (Must have transportation to travel to and from locations and transport materials)
• Co-leading group gatherings, caregiver discussions, exploration activities, and reflections
• Circulating during workshops to engage participants in conversation and learning
• Sharing ideas, feedback, and recommendations to refine programming
• Building and sustaining positive relationships with partners and participants

Port Discovery is seeking individuals who are:

• Fluent in Spanish
• Energetic, enthusiastic, creative, dependable and flexible
• Passionate about play and making a difference in the lives of families and the community
• Engaging with children and adults individually and in large groups
• Comfortable co-facilitating workshops with children and adults of multiple age groups
• Calm under pressure and has excellent communication skills

Required Qualifications:

• High School Diploma (required); Early Childhood Education credentials or college degree preferred
• Personal transportation is required
• Must be 18 years of age and able to pass a criminal background check
• Strong consideration for fluency in Spanish (speak, read & write)
• 2 – 4 years of previous experience working or volunteering with children and/or adults in an educational setting
• Public programming and/or group facilitation experience is a strong plus
• Warm and welcoming interpersonal communication style
• Express ideas clearly and present information effectively
• Ability to work a varied schedule

Physical Demands & Work Environment:

Must be able to meet physical demands of the job to include walking, standing, climbing, bending, kneeling and lifting / moving objects up to 50 pounds. Will be required to stand for long periods of time while performing educational programming. Will also frequently sit for administrative meetings and material prep work. This position involves lots of travel and the need to traverse uneven terrain with bins and outreach supplies. This position predominately interacts with participants-APLI-families, community partners, educators and co-workers. Work is performed indoors, and the noise level is usually moderate to high. Must be comfortable working amongst small groups of children and caregivers.

APLI positions Port Discovery as a critical multi-generational resource that will empower Maryland's families, communities, and the early childhood workforce to apply playful learning strategies that inspire joy and discovery as young children grow and develop.
