The Society of Woman Geographers (SWG) is looking for an experienced Director of Operations to accomplish a myriad of responsibilities that together ensure that our 100-year old organization thrives in its second century. The ideal candidate will be responsible for business operations; member records and relations; communications; supporting the volunteer board in governance; and maintaining the headquarters property that includes two rental apartments.
SWG was founded in 1925 to bring together women who shared ambitions and interests in exploration and achievement, exchange knowledge derived from fieldwork and encourage women pursuing geographical exploration and research. In naming their organization the Society of Woman Geographers, the founders intended the word "geographer" in its broadest sense. SWG today has about 400 members around the world. Our major philanthropy is financial support for women in graduate studies.
This position has oversight of everything to keep membership humming. The successful applicant will:
- Attend to office operations, procedures, and tasks to ensure organizational effectiveness.
- Manage memberships through their lifecycle, from welcoming new members, through active membership years, to archiving past members' records at the Library of Congress.
- Sustain collegiality and community among members through personal contact and through the newsletter and website.
- Support the Board and committees such as Membership, Fellowships, and Communications and Engagement.
- Support the Nominating Committee and oversee technical aspects of annual elections.
- Provide continuity between changing boards and with the President, plan annual board orientation.
- Make efficient use of outside resources such as bookkeeper, tax accountant, web designer, and lawyer.
The right fit candidate will be an excellent communicator who demonstrates heartfelt warmth in both verbal and written communications with members and has meticulous business writing skills along with:
- Bachelor's degree in business administration or related field (Master's degree preferred).
- 10 years of applicable business management or operations experience.
- Demonstrated experience in budget management and financial operations.
- Experience with non-profit organizational management.
- Some facilities or property management experience preferred.
- Proficient with Office 365, the Microsoft Office Suite.
- Experience with member-relations management software (e.g. Bloomerang), marketing platforms (e.g. Constant Contact), financial applications (e.g. Quickbooks), and remote meeting platforms.
It's a plus if you have:
- Experience supporting a Board of Directors
- Event planning experience
This is a full-time position working a minimum of 3 days a week from our Capitol Hill office.

The salary range for this position is $75,000 to $85,000 annually.
