Position Overview
We are seeking a talented and hands-on Weld Engineer to provide technical expertise and leadership for welding operations within a manufacturing environment. This role will support production, quality, laboratory, maintenance, and engineering teams by optimizing welding processes, improving product quality, increasing process capability, and supporting new product launches.
The ideal candidate will have strong experience with robotic and automated welding systems, weld process development, troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and continuous improvement initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as the technical subject matter expert for welding processes and related manufacturing operations.
- Provide support to welding laboratory personnel, testing activities, documentation, and compliance records.
- Evaluate and improve weld assembly processes, tooling, fixtures, and production equipment.
- Develop, validate, and optimize welding parameters and process settings.
- Recommend and implement improvements for robotic and manual welding operations.
- Troubleshoot weld defects, equipment issues, dimensional concerns, and process instability.
- Lead or support root cause investigations and corrective action activities.
- Support robotic welding cells and automated assembly systems.
- Assist with the selection, installation, commissioning, validation, and launch of new welding equipment.
- Develop and maintain welding procedures, work instructions, technical standards, and process documentation.
- Conduct weld quality evaluations, testing reviews, and process capability studies.
- Collaborate with suppliers, integrators, maintenance, tooling, production, quality, and program management teams.
- Support production trials, launches, customer requirements, and audit activities.
- Train production, maintenance, and quality personnel on welding practices, standards, and procedures.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives focused on quality, throughput, uptime, scrap reduction, rework reduction, and overall equipment effectiveness (OEE).
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Welding Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
- Equivalent hands-on welding engineering experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
- Strong understanding of welding processes, manufacturing operations, and process optimization.
- Ability to interpret engineering drawings, weld symbols, GD&T, and technical specifications.
- Strong troubleshooting, data analysis, project management, and communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Automotive manufacturing experience.
- Experience with robotic and automated welding processes.
- Hands-on experience with:
- Resistance Spot Welding
- MIG Welding
- GMAW
- Projection Welding
- Other advanced joining technologies
- Experience programming, troubleshooting, or supporting industrial welding robots.
- Experience with ABB and/or Yaskawa robotic welding systems.
- Knowledge of weld testing methods, destructive and non-destructive evaluation techniques, metallurgy, and weld quality standards.
- Experience supporting new equipment launches, process validations, and production startup activities.
