Job Summary
We are seeking a dynamic, passionate, and faith-filled Head Softball Coach to lead our softball program at The High School of St. Thomas More. In alignment with our Catholic mission, this role involves developing athletes’ skills, fostering teamwork, and cultivating a positive environment that promotes spiritual, academic, and athletic growth. The ideal candidate will bring a strong background in sports coaching, mentorship, and student-athlete development. As the head of the softball program, you will inspire players to reach their full potential while emphasizing Christ-centered sportsmanship, discipline, and personal integrity both on and off the field.
Responsibilities
- Program Leadership: Lead all aspects of the softball team’s training sessions, practices, and competitions, ensuring skill development, strategic gameplay, and alignment with the school's athletic philosophy.
- Faith Integration: Model and promote Catholic values, initiating team prayers, fostering character development, and encouraging athletes to use their God-given talents to the best of their abilities.
- Culture & Sportsmanship: Foster a positive, inclusive team culture by prioritizing sportsmanship, mutual respect, and accountability among players, coaches, and parents.
- Player Development: Manage roster selection and ongoing player evaluations to build a competitive, cohesive, and disciplined team.
- Collaboration: Coordinate closely with the Athletic Director, school administration, and booster clubs regarding schedules, facilities, budgeting, and transportation.
- Athletic Training: Develop comprehensive practice plans that incorporate physical conditioning, technical drills, and game tactics suited for high school student-athletes.
- Community Engagement: Serve as an ambassador for St. Thomas More, communicating effectively with parents, alumni, and the broader community while supporting school-wide events and recruitment.
Qualifications
- Experience: Proven experience in sports coaching with a focus on softball; previous high school head coaching or collegiate playing/coaching experience is highly desirable.
- Mission Alignment: A strong commitment to supporting the Catholic mission of The High School of St. Thomas More and the spiritual development of youth.
- Leadership Skills: Demonstrated ability to mentor teenage student-athletes, manage team dynamics, and maintain a safe, disciplined, and supportive environment.
- Communication: Excellent interpersonal and communication skills for collaborating with students, parents, faculty, and athletic staff.
- Fitness & Safety: Strong knowledge of athletic conditioning, injury prevention, and standard high school athletic association (e.g., IHSA) rules and regulations.
- Certifications: CPR/AED certification and completion of required diocesan safe environment training (e.g., Virtus) and athletic coaching certifications upon hire.
