 HJF is seeking a Scientist I to develop and conduct research projects. Investigates the feasibility of applying a wide variety of scientific principles and concepts to potential inventions, products, and problems. Develops new technologies and protocols.

This position will be in support of USU / WRNMMC Department of Surgery's Limb Optimization and Osseointegration Program (LOOP)

The Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine (HJF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing military medicine. We serve military, medical, academic and government clients by administering, managing and supporting preeminent scientific programs that benefit members of the armed forces and civilians alike. Since its founding in 1983, HJF has served as a vital link between the military medical community and its federal and private partners. HJF's support and administrative capabilities allow military medical researchers and clinicians to maintain their scientific focus and accomplish their research goals.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct and contribute to multidisciplinary research activities within the Limb Optimization and Osseointegration Program (LOOP), supporting studies focused on clinical outcomes, musculoskeletal biology, proteomics, registry-based analysis, and emerging computational approaches related to limb optimization, bone health, and osseointegration.
  • Design, execute, and document experimental and analytical protocols under general scientific direction, including formulation of testable hypotheses, preparation of study materials, and rigorous maintenance of research documentation in accordance with accepted scientific and regulatory standards.
  • Process, analyze, and interpret clinical, registry, and laboratory-derived datasets using established statistical and computational methods, contributing analytically sound results to manuscripts, abstracts, and technical reports.
  • Prepare and co-author peer-reviewed manuscripts, conference abstracts, and research reports, translating complex datasets into clear, publishable scientific outputs that advance extremity trauma, bone health, and osseointegration research.
  • Support the development of extramural funding by contributing to grant proposals and funding applications (e.g., Department of Defense, NIH, foundations), including data generation, preliminary analyses, and technical narrative development.
  • Assist in the advancement of research methodologies by applying and refining existing clinical metrics, analytical frameworks, and data workflows to evaluate skeletal adaptation, implant performance, infection risk, and functional outcomes.
  • Provide day-to-day scientific support and mentorship to research staff, trainees, or technicians as assigned, including guidance on data collection, analysis, and adherence to study protocols.
  • Collaborate effectively with clinicians, scientists, and external partners across multi-site studies, contributing to registry development, data harmonization efforts, and coordinated research initiatives.
  • Perform other duties as assigned in support of the scientific objectives and operational needs of the LOOP research program.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Assigned Lead: May recommend the following: employee hiring, disciplinary action, and starting salaries; provide input on employee performance evaluations.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Doctorate Degree required.
  • Minimum of 2-5 years experience required.

Required Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

  • Demonstrated ability to contribute meaningfully to peer-reviewed scientific publications, abstracts, and conference presentations, with evidence of growing scholarly independence and productivity.
  • Working knowledge of biomedical and translational research relevant to musculoskeletal health, clinical outcomes research, and osseointegration, with the ability to operate effectively within multidisciplinary research teams.
  • Experience with statistical and computational analysis of clinical and/or biological datasets, including application of methods such as regression modeling, longitudinal analysis, or introductory machine learning techniques under guidance.
  • Ability to process and interpret complex experimental or clinical data with attention to rigor, reproducibility, and documentation standards.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly convey scientific concepts, analytical findings, and methodological approaches to diverse clinical and research audiences.
  • Ability to work independently within defined project scopes while collaborating effectively with senior investigators and program leadership.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple research tasks concurrently.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a T1 Public Trust background check.

Physical Capabilities

  • Lifting: Requires lifting materials up to 25 lbs.
  • Ability to stand or sit at a computer for prolonged periods

Work Environment

  • This position will take place primarily in a laboratory setting.

Compensation

  • The annual salary range for this position is $77,600-$104,000. Actual salary will be determined based on experience, education, etc.
