The Murtha Cancer Center is seeking an experienced Clinical Research Coordinator II. This position will be in support of the John P. Murtha Cancer Center at: Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, Portsmouth, VA. The Murtha Cancer Center is a modern, patient-centric, tri-service military healthcare facility. Its comprehensive core of military and civilian oncologists and other cancer-trained clinicians and researchers provide multidisciplinary cancer-care delivery and patient-family support services. Our Cancer Center, the only DoD Cancer Center of Excellence within the Military Health System, offers its patients access to innovative cancer diagnostic and treatment technologies.

Note: Due to clearance requirements this position is only able to consider US. Citizens.

The successful candidate will play a crucial role in clinical research activities, including patient recruitment, consent processes, specimen processing and shipping, study documentation and basic regulatory management for a study involving Multi-Cancer Detection Tests. The Department of Defense (DoD), represented by USU/MCCRP, is participating in the NCI Cancer Screening Research Network (CSRN). The CSRN consists of seven civilian healthcare systems, the Department of Veterans Affairs and the DoD. The first study the CSRN is undertaking is a pilot study, known as the Vanguard Study (on Multi-Cancer Detection), which will enroll 24,000 total volunteers over four years. Multi-Cancer Detection tests claim to screen for several types of cancers using only a blood sample. The study will address if detection with this method leads to better outcomes and more lives saved. The results of the Vanguard study will inform the design of a larger randomized controlled trial involving about 225,000 people.

Responsibilities

  • Screens patients for eligibility in participation of research protocol(s).
  • Reviews patient medical records; assists with participant identification, and enrollment. Obtains informed consent and provides education about the research study, roles, and other vital information.
  • Interviews participants regarding medical history and collects questionnaire data based on self-report and medical record review.
  • Collects and processes blood specimens according to established procedures.
  • Responsible for implementing SOPs, research protocols and policies for all assigned research projects. Assists with regulatory submissions and actions as needed.
  • Performs data entry for research projects ensuring that data is entered for analysis in a timely, efficient, and accurate manner. Ensures that confidentiality and security of data are maintained.
  • Maintains laboratory standards and inventories in accordance with good laboratory practices.
  • Interfaces with various clinic providers and administrative personnel.
  • Adheres to legal, professional, and ethical codes with respect to confidentiality and privacy. Assures that protocol requirements are achieved within good clinical practices. Assists with monitoring audits/visits for protocols.
  • Participates in routine (weekly/monthly) update calls with MCC and site PI.
  • Oversees the maintenance of supplies, procurement, and shipping of study-related materials.
  • May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor or PI. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for role.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Minimum of 3-5 years experience required

Required Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

  • Knowledge of federal and local regulations and policies pertinent to research involving human subjects.
  • Knowledge of procedures and techniques necessary for performing research tasks; ability to learn and become proficient in data acquisition and research responsibilities related to research protocols.
  • Familiarity with medical terminology.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and to collaborate with individuals of all levels.
  • Experience in phlebotomy or other blood related procedures is preferred but not required.
  • U.S. citizenship and the ability to obtain and maintain a T3 secret clearance.

Work Environment

  • This position will take place primarily in a Clinic setting.

Compensation

  • The annual salary range for this position is $57,650-$75,000. Actual salary will be determined based on experience, education, etc.
