Job Summary
The Harbor House Inn rests on the edge of the rustic Mendocino coastline. Guests retreat to the Harbor House Inn to enjoy an intimate, rejuvenating stay surrounded by pristine nature. The 11-guest room property features a private cove with panoramic views, walkable gardens, and a 20-seat Michelin-starred restaurant that serves a coastal-cuisine focused tasting menu Thursday-Monday evenings. The Inn is located just 30-minutes south of the historical village of Mendocino. We are looking to add a hospitality-driven, detail oriented Sommilier to our staff.
Responsibilities:
- Provide warm, humble and knowledgeable service throughout the property
- Make suggestions based on guest preferences
- Liaise with restaurant and outlet operations staff to ensure a seamless guest experience
- Assist with the curation of the guest’s experience both on and off property
- Knowledge of wine list, offerings, price points, and best pairing options for menu items
- Take and serve guest orders with attention to dietary restrictions
- Arrange table settings
- Ensure tables and guest-facing spaces are clean during service
- Attend daily briefings and relevant departmental and interdepartmental meetings
- Assist in creating a culture encourages our staff to grow
- Support beverage and service teams
- Prepare all required paperwork including forms, reports, and schedules in an organized and timely manner
- Ensure safety, security, and asset protection policies and procedures are observed.
- Ensure privacy and anonymity of all guests through adherence to company policy
- Inventory and cost control
- Planning and maintenance of wine storage
- Ensure consistent, thorough, and timely communication to peers, managers, guests, and vendors
- Understand and comply with all federal, state, county, and municipal regulations/ordinances that pertain to health, safety, and labor requirements of the property, its employees, and its guests
- Provide warm, humble, and knowledgeable service throughout the property
- Greet guests and present menus
- Deliver checks and collect payment
- Maintain clear communication with guests and coworkers
- Adhere to health department rules
- Opening and closing duties as assigned
- Fill in where needed to ensure the guest experience is never compromised as a result of operational challenges
- Continued food, beverage, and hospitality education in daily lineup meeting and through service
- Represent the organization positively and inspire employees, customers, industry partners, and the community.

Qualifications
- Minimum 5 years of related food, beverage and/or service experience
- Level 1 (Introductory) Sommelier certification required, Level 2 or 3 preferred
- Great interpersonal and communication skills
- Flexibility and initiative
- Creative problem-solving and critical decision-making skills
- Valid Manager or Food Handler Certificate.
- Responsible Beverage Service Certification
- Understanding and knowledge of safety, sanitation and food handling procedures.
- Excellent computer competency, e.g. well versed in PC and/or Mac-based MS Office, POS and PMS
- Knowledge of OpenTable, Tock, or similar booking program
Physical Requirements
- Ability to speak and hear, vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
- Constant standing with some walking
- Be able to work in a standing position for long periods of time (up to 8 hours).
- Be able to reach, bend, stoop and frequently lift up to 35 pounds and occasionally lift/move 50 pounds.
- Be able to climb stairs and ladders or stepstools
- Continual use of manual dexterity and gross motor skills with frequent use of bi-manual dexterity and fine motor skills
- Flexibility in the work area. May be required to sit or stand and move locations as space permits
- Varying schedule to include evenings, holidays and extended hours as business dictates.
