POSITION SUMMARY

The Community Crisis and Safety Specialist is stationed at the emergency shelter to provide on-site crisis intervention, stabilization, and supportive services to individuals and families experiencing mental health and/or substance use crises. This position serves as a direct point of access for shelter guests who are in acute emotional distress, ensuring they receive timely, compassionate, and professional behavioral health support. The Community Crisis and Safety Specialist collaborates with shelter staff, community providers, and emergency responders to promote safety, stability, and connection to ongoing care.

POSITION DUTIES

- Provide immediate crisis intervention, de-escalation, and stabilization for shelter guests experiencing mental health or substance use crises.

- Conduct risk assessments, including suicide and homicide risk, and implement safety planning as appropriate.

- Deliver trauma-informed, culturally responsive care in alignment with agency values and best practices.

- Facilitate warm hand-offs and referrals to appropriate community resources, outpatient treatment, detox/residential programs, or emergency services.

- Work collaboratively with shelter staff to maintain a safe and supportive environment for all residents.

- Document all services provided in the electronic health record (EHR) according to agency and regulatory standards.

- Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings, case consultations, and staff trainings, as needed.

- Provide psychoeducation, brief counseling, and coping skills support to shelter residents.

- Assist in coordinating follow-up services to ensure continuity of care.

- Maintain professional boundaries and uphold ethical standards in all interactions.

- Assists members and families in obtaining needed services and community resources that help meet basic needs.

- Provides effective, professional, trauma-informed, and recovery-oriented customer service to internal and external stakeholders.

- Recognizes, prevents, and responds to high-risk or dangerous situations, including knowing when to involve supervisors and/or medical practitioners during a crisis event.

- Demonstrates ability to recognize, prevent and respond to evidence of member injury, illness, abuse, neglect, and exploitation.

- Performs other duties as assigned.

GENERAL EXPECTATIONS

- Provide high quality customer service to internal and external customers.

- Must work well under pressure, meeting multiple and sometimes conflicting deadlines.

- Demonstrate cooperative behavior with colleagues and supervisors.

- Participate in Quality Improvement and Performance Improvement Processes of the agency.

- Complete all TGC required training courses on time.

- Maintains a high level of professionalism while performing job functions.

- Demonstrate flexibility and a willingness to learn.

- This position is 100% onsite, in the state of Arizona.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

Required:

- Any one of the following education/experience combinations equivalent to four (4) years:

o Bachelor’s degree in behavioral health or a related field or discipline.

o Associate’s degree and at least two years of health services experience.

o High School Diploma or Graduate Equivalency Diploma and four (4) years’ experience.

- Current driver’s license and able to pass MVR screening.

- At least 21 years of age.

- Ability to travel to other clinic sites or the community if needed.

- Strong interpersonal skills.

- Ability to obtain Arizona Fingerprint Clearance Card.

- Knowledge of available community resources.

The physical demands of this position warrant:

- Sedentary Work: Occasionally lifting 10 pounds or less, sitting most of the time and may involve walking or standing for brief periods of time.

This includes any identifying information concerning current, past or prospective clients or personnel.
