This job description is for the Greensboro Science Center full-time Horticulturist position.
As a member of the Horticulture Department, the primary duties include general outdoor campus landscape and exhibited garden zone maintenance, troubleshooting landscape needs, as well as the continued development of new botanical spaces. General tasks include irrigation work, mulching, seasonal planting and care, pest and disease management, scheduling of seasonal treatments and fertilization, pruning, trimming, composting, select browse collection and browse garden implementations, and invasive weed control. The full-time horticulturist is responsible for maintaining select botanical zones across campus and coordinating with animal care staff according to protocol for animal exhibit zone botanical developments or assisting with their maintenance. The position works within and collaborates among a larger team of horticulturists, groundskeeping staff, and horticulture based volunteers.
The selected applicant must be available weekdays Monday - Friday with the flexibility to work before or after standard operating hours in various outdoor weather conditions. The morning timeframe may shift seasonally with daylight hours. The employee must adhere to safety protocols and be able to perform the safe operation of power equipment such as edgers, leaf blower, chainsaw, hedge trimmer, weed eater, basic gardening hand tools and on-site utility vehicles.
Qualifications
Minimum qualifications include a high school degree or equivalent G.E.D. and 1-2 years of work experience in landscaping or the horticultural field. Key certifications, associate’s or bachelor’s degree in horticulture, biology, the plant sciences, related environmental science or equivalent years in work experience is desired. Experience in arboriculture is a plus. Must have a valid North Carolina driver’s license.
Skills
-Prior Gardening/Landscaping experience, especially beneficial within public garden spaces
