Job Overview
We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Nursing Supervisor to oversee nursing operations within our healthcare facility. Responsibilities
- Supervise and manage nursing staff across various departments, including medical-surgical units, intensive care units (ICU), emergency medicine, geriatrics, behavioral health, and long-term care settings such as nursing homes and assisted living facilities.
- Oversee patient assessments, vital signs monitoring, and physical examinations to ensure accurate documentation and appropriate care planning.
- Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams for diagnostic evaluations, medication administration, catheterization procedures, IV infusion management, ventilator support, and other advanced clinical interventions.
- Ensure compliance with healthcare regulations including HIPAA privacy standards, NCQA standards for quality assurance, and OSHA infection control protocols.
- Facilitate discharge planning, case management, utilization review, and utilization management to optimize patient outcomes and resource utilization.
- Maintain medical records using Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems such as Cerner or eClinicalWorks; ensure accurate medical documentation and coding including ICD-9/ICD-10 coding practices.
- Provide training and mentorship to nursing staff on sterile techniques, aseptic procedures, CPR (Basic Life Support), IV insertion/injection techniques, phlebotomy, suturing, and other clinical skills.
- Lead efforts in infection control measures and ensure adherence to safety protocols across all patient care activities.
- Participate in management meetings to develop staffing schedules that meet patient needs while fostering a positive team environment.
- Support specialized care areas such as dementia/memory care units or pediatric units like the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), Neonatal Ventilator support, or labor/delivery services when applicable.
Skills
- Extensive clinical experience in critical care environments such as Level I Trauma Centers or Level II Trauma Centers; ICU experience is essential.
- Proficiency with EMR/EHR systems including Cerner and Athenahealth for documentation and order entry.
- Strong knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy/physiology, diagnostic evaluation techniques including sonography or spinal taps as needed for specific units.
- Demonstrated leadership in supervising nursing teams with proven team management skills; experience with nurse management is highly valued.
- Expertise in managing complex patient cases involving acute pain management, behavioral health issues, dementia care, or working with individuals with developmental disabilities.
- Familiarity with ICD coding (ICD-9/ICD-10), CPT coding for procedures such as cardiac catheterization or gastric lavage; understanding of DRG systems for billing purposes.
- Competence in performing advanced procedures including airway management, sterile processing techniques, catheter care (including Foley catheters), tube feeding protocols, and specimen collection/processing.
- Ability to perform physical examinations and assessments accurately while maintaining high standards of patient safety and comfort.
- Knowledge of pharmacology related to medication administration routes including injections and IV therapy; experience with IV infusion management is preferred.
- Strong understanding of healthcare regulations related to occupational health law and workers' compensation law when applicable.
- Excellent communication skills for triage processes, health coaching sessions, discharge instructions delivery, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
