What are the responsibilities and job description for the Educator position at The Glass House Museum?
The Glass House Educator serves as an informed and friendly ambassador for The Glass House and the National Trust for Historic Preservation by interpreting the histories of this modernist landmark and its surroundings for diverse audiences through thematic tours and informal talks. The Educator conducts research to develop personalized tours and talks around a core interpretive theme which use the art, architecture, and stories of The Glass House to engage the public in a conversational, dialogic manner.
The Glass House, built between 1949 and 1995 by architect Philip Johnson, is a National Trust Historic Site located in New Canaan, Connecticut. The pastoral 49-acre landscape comprises fourteen structures, including the Glass House (1949), and features a permanent collection of 20th-century painting and sculpture, along with temporary exhibitions. Tours of the site are available in April through December.
The Glass House engages in frank dialogue and open exchange about all aspects of its history, including Philip Johnson’s own history, and works diligently to expand inclusivity in all aspects of our programming and operations. The National Trust and the Glass House are committed to honestly exploring and discussing the multifaceted and sometimes difficult histories of the site as part of our dedicated effort to tell the full American story.
The Glass House is open to the public April 16 – December 14th, Thursday - Monday from 10am to 5pm. Each Tour Guide is expected to work 1-3 shifts of between 2 and 6 hours per week; additional hours available.
Duties:
- Interpret the Glass House, its architecture, landscape, and/or artifacts through thematic, conversational tours that encourage visitors to better understand and appreciate the site within historical and contemporary contexts.
- Interpret temporary art exhibitions on a seasonally changing basis.
- Explain and interpret on‐going preservation projects as well as critical preservation priorities.
- Engage visitors in active observation, discussion and synthesis.
- Respond to different groups (adults, school children, families) by varying information and approaches as appropriate.
- Attend all required training sessions and contribute insights drawn from tour experiences and visitor response.
- Provide exceptional customer service to all site guests and interact positively and professionally with site colleagues.
- Convey the mission of the Glass House and the National Trust for Historic Preservation as well as the historical association between the site and the Trust.
- Assist in monitoring collections security (buildings, objects, grounds) and visitor safety, responding calmly and professionally to emergencies and promptly notifying supervisor of incidents or unsafe conditions.
- Deliver in‐depth, specialized or private / VIP tours, as assigned.
- Assist as needed with educational activities, special events and other additional duties and responsibilities.
- Assist in the Visitor Center with visitor orientation as needed.
Qualifications
- Experience in public speaking, presenting educational or promotional information to the public, customer service, community organizing, or other people-centered environment. Experience in an arts, museum, or other cultural setting a plus.
- Experience as an educator, guide, event facilitator or related role preferred.
- Knowledge of and enthusiasm for architecture, American history, art, design, or other topics related to the site preferred.
- Enthusiasm for sharing ideas or knowledge with others and skill with active listening techniques preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to engage effectively with culturally diverse audiences, and audiences of varying ages.
- Associate's Degree or equivalent experience preferred.
- Fluency in English required. Bilingual and multilingual individuals are encouraged to apply!
- Ability to adapt and be flexible in a dynamic work environment.
- Flexibility with schedule and hours. Ability to work some weekends and holidays preferred.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Minimum physical requirements include but are not limited to: remain at a stationary post for up to 120 minutes; move across uneven terrain; move packages up to 25 pounds.
