Overview
We are seeking a compassionate and dedicated Substance Abuse Counselor to join our mental health and behavioral health team. The ideal candidate will provide comprehensive addiction counseling and mental health support to individuals in a group Intensive Outpatient Treatment setting, utilizing evidence-based practices. This role involves conducting clinical assessments and delivering group therapy sessions in a supportive environment. The Substance Abuse Counselor will play a vital role in guiding clients through recovery processes, managing crisis situations, and coordinating care with other healthcare professionals. Experience in psychotherapy, motivational interviewing, and crisis intervention is essential to effectively support clients on their path to wellness.

Responsibilities

  • Provide group IOT classes and counseling sessions focused on addiction recovery, mental health management, and behavioral health issues.
  • Utilize motivational interviewing techniques to enhance client engagement and motivation for change.
  • Manage crisis situations with appropriate crisis intervention strategies, ensuring client safety and stabilization.
  • Maintain accurate medical documentation, medical records, and case management records in compliance with HIPAA regulations.
  • Collaborate with healthcare teams to coordinate home & community care, hospital services, and outpatient programs.
  • Stay current with research developments in addiction medicine, behavioral health, ICD coding (ICD-9/ICD-10), CPT coding, and related medical terminology.
  • Participate in ongoing training related to trauma-informed care such as PTSD care, behavior management, applied behavior analysis (ABA), and diagnostic coding.
  • Ensure compliance with all legal and ethical standards related to patient care, including confidentiality requirements under HIPAA.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in social work, psychology, counseling, or a related field; advanced certification or licensure as required by state regulations.
  • Proven experience in addiction counseling, clinical counseling, or mental health services; home & community care experience is a plus.
  • Strong skills in psychotherapy techniques such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), behavioral therapy, crisis management, and case management.
  • Proficiency in patient care activities including patient assessment, intake procedures, diagnosis using ICD coding systems (ICD-9/ICD-10), and medical documentation.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and familiarity with medical records management.
  • Ability to perform diagnostic evaluations for mental health conditions including PTSD or other trauma-related disorders.
  • Excellent communication skills for effective individual/group counseling sessions; experience with research-based practices preferred.
  • Ability to handle crisis situations calmly and effectively while maintaining professional boundaries.

Pay: $28.00 - $35.00 per hour
