Who We Are

Since 2004, The Gathering Inn has compassionately reached out to individuals experiencing homelessness, aiming to welcome new beginnings and transform lives. Originally a winter-only shelter serving 40 individuals nightly, we have evolved into a multifaceted organization with multiple locations, serving nearly 500 individuals and families daily. Our mission is to meet people where they are, inspire hope, and walk alongside them on their journey to sustainable housing. Through our emergency shelter, permanent supportive housing, and medical respite care, we provide programs and support designed to empower guests toward self-sufficiency and long-term stability.

Position Overview

The Director of Programs at our new location ensures high-quality, consistent services at The Gathering Inn’s emergency shelter. This includes ensuring the safety of guests, team, and volunteers, as well as providing adequate program activities and resources that support the mission, vision, and values of the organization as they relate to guests. The role also involves hiring and managing team, overseeing contracts and budgets, developing program activities, and managing relationships with community partners, including Health and Human Services, Sheriff, and Probation.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Plan the delivery of the overall program and its activities in accordance with the mission, vision, and values of the organization.
  • Lead program team to achieve the outcomes and key performance indicators identified for the program in support of the organization's strategic plan.
  • Develop a strong program culture of teamwork and accountability. Be mindful of the organization’s “guest first” approach and ensure that program team conduct themselves accordingly and make decisions predicated upon it.
  • Implement policies and procedures in line with existing and future funding standards. Implement performance and quality improvement processes in compliance with TGI’s master processes. Communicate changes and new rules/regulations to site team and volunteers.
  • Research and apply best practices from local and national agencies. Follow shelter procedures for handling emergencies such as fire evacuation, police intervention, incident, and injury reports, and follow case management recommended guidelines.
  • Ensure that employees maintain high standards of data management and reporting established by funding partners.
  • Recruit, interview, hire, and ensure training for program team in accordance with the organization's strategic plan as well as policies and procedures.
  • Ensure that the program adheres to the organization’s human resource policies, procedures, and practices.
  • Ensure that all program team and volunteers receive an appropriate orientation to the organization and programs.
  • Oversee Site Managers to ensure team are working effectively to assist guests.
  • Oversee the delivery of food for the program participants in accordance with the adopt-a-meal program and contract. Ensure close collaboration with the adopt-a-meal coordinator to ensure adopt-a-meal groups have a seamless experience.
  • Communicate with team and other managers to ensure effective and efficient program delivery. Make program recommendations based on those communications.
  • Interface with outside community partners such as members of the campus’ surrounding neighborhoods, parole officers, police officers, emergency responders, collaborative partners, and local government officials to ensure continued successful community relationships related to the program.
  • In concert with the Director of Quality Assurance, ensure that all reports required of the program are submitted on time and are accurate.
  • Communicate with guests and other stakeholders to gain community support for the program and to solicit input to improve the program.
  • Oversee general maintenance of the physical location, identify issues, and advocate for corrective action with the CPO.

Position Expectations

  • Provide strong leadership for the program.
  • Manage budgets and contracts.
  • Act as a point of contact for Procurement, Sheriff, Probation, and HHS.
  • Communicate regularly with the CPO on all pertinent issues.
  • Assist others in a compassionate manner without ethnic or social prejudices. Be tactful and mindful of issues and challenges unique to homelessness, substance use, and persons with physical and mental illnesses.
  • Demonstrate computer proficiency for all programs used by the organization.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Direct supervision of Site Managers, Case Managers, SUDS, Meal Coordinator, Housing Coordinator; indirect supervision of Specialists.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in psychology, sociology, human or child development, or another human or social services field.
  • At least 5 years of relevant work experience in a similar environment, preferably in mental health and/or substance abuse.
  • Demonstrated experience working with individuals experiencing homelessness or low-income families, with sensitivity to issues surrounding homelessness, substance abuse, mental illness, or physical disabilities.
  • Experience using software necessary to support the development, operation, and evaluation of programs.
  • Computer literacy, including proficiency in Microsoft Office, Teams, Excel, and Outlook.
