What are the responsibilities and job description for the Assistant Director of Admissions and Placement position at The Gateway School?
Our dynamic, fast-paced Admissions Office has an opening for an Assistant Director of Admissions and Placement who will support the Director of Admissions and Placement.
Responsibilities
- Serve as a warm and knowledgeable point of contact for prospective families by conducting tours and assisting with admissions events, open houses, and information sessions.
- Build strong relationships with families, educational consultants, evaluators, and community professionals while supporting prospective students throughout the admissions process with professionalism and care.
- Coordinate student visit days, shadow visits, academic screenings, and scheduling logistics.
- Participate in application review and admissions committee discussions.
- Assist in evaluating applicant fit within the school’s mission and programs.
- Help manage admissions timelines, communications, and applicant follow-up as a way to support enrollment and re-enrollment initiatives.
- Work within Veracross and departmental systems to maintain applicant records and communications and to assist with admissions tracking, internal reporting, and organization of applicant materials.
- Represent the school professionally at fairs, conferences, and outreach events.
- Contribute ideas for admissions strategy, family engagement, and enrollment growth.

The ideal candidate will have:
- Bachelor’s degree and at least five years of experience in admissions work. Master’s degree preferred
- Strong background in Special Education, specifically language-based learning differences
- Expansive professional network, preferably focused in the New York City educational community
- Administrative and/or leadership experience
- Demonstrated commitment to, leadership experience with, and a record of active engagement with diversity, equity, and/or inclusion work
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- Strong organizational skills and adept at prioritizing, managing, and shifting between multiple projects
- Experience with Veracross preferred
The Gateway School offers a competitive compensation package and a comprehensive professional development program. This is a 12-month a year position. Salary range is $95,000 - $115,000. For over 60 years, The Gateway School has transformed the lives of bright children who experience academic difficulty as a result of language-based learning disabilities (e.g., dyslexia, reading and writing disorders), attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), executive function disorder, or auditory processing difficulties. Located on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, Gateway enrolls approximately 150 students between the ages of 5-14. In small classes with a low student-to-teacher ratio, faculty and therapists meet students where they are, individualize instruction accordingly, and help them to become skilled, strategic, independent learners, capable of successfully advocating for themselves in their lives beyond Gateway.
