Job Title: Sous Chef
Location: The Gage – Chicago, IL
Position Summary
The Sous Chef is a key leadership role within the kitchen at The Gage, responsible for supporting the Executive Chef in overseeing daily kitchen operations, maintaining high culinary standards, and leading the back-of-house team. This role requires strong leadership, organization, and a commitment to excellence in a fast-paced, high-volume environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist the Executive Chef in managing all kitchen operations, including prep, service, and closing procedures
- Supervise and lead line cooks and kitchen staff to ensure consistency, quality, and efficiency
- Ensure all menu items are prepared and presented according to The Gage’s standards
- Train, mentor, and develop kitchen team members
- Monitor food quality, portion control, and presentation during service
- Maintain compliance with all food safety, sanitation, and health department regulations
- Assist with inventory management, ordering, and cost control
- Help develop and execute seasonal menu items and specials
- Step in to manage the kitchen in the absence of the Executive Chef
Qualifications
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required; bachelor’s degree or equivalent 4-year degree preferred.
- 3 plus years of experience in kitchen or food preparation environment required
- 1 year of sous chef or kitchen management experience preferred
- ServSafe Food Handlers Certificate
- Chicago Food Service Sanitation Manager Certification (or ability to obtain within 30 days)
- Strong leadership and team management skills
- Excellent knowledge of cooking techniques, food safety, and kitchen operations
- Ability to work under pressure and manage multiple priorities
- Strong organizational and communication skills
Work Environment
- High-volume, fast-paced kitchen environment
- Exposure to heat, sharp equipment, and kitchen machinery
- Flexible schedule required, including evenings, weekends, and holidays
Compensation & Benefits
- Salary Range: $68,000-$80,000 per year, commensurate based on experience.

- 401k Program with Match: Company matches $1 for $1 up to $1,000 per calendar year.
