Job Title: Sous Chef
Location: The Gage – Chicago, IL

Position Summary
The Sous Chef is a key leadership role within the kitchen at The Gage, responsible for supporting the Executive Chef in overseeing daily kitchen operations, maintaining high culinary standards, and leading the back-of-house team. This role requires strong leadership, organization, and a commitment to excellence in a fast-paced, high-volume environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist the Executive Chef in managing all kitchen operations, including prep, service, and closing procedures
  • Supervise and lead line cooks and kitchen staff to ensure consistency, quality, and efficiency
  • Ensure all menu items are prepared and presented according to The Gage’s standards
  • Train, mentor, and develop kitchen team members
  • Monitor food quality, portion control, and presentation during service
  • Maintain compliance with all food safety, sanitation, and health department regulations
  • Assist with inventory management, ordering, and cost control
  • Help develop and execute seasonal menu items and specials
  • Step in to manage the kitchen in the absence of the Executive Chef

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required; bachelor’s degree or equivalent 4-year degree preferred.
  • 3 plus years of experience in kitchen or food preparation environment required
  • 1 year of sous chef or kitchen management experience preferred
  • ServSafe Food Handlers Certificate
  • Chicago Food Service Sanitation Manager Certification (or ability to obtain within 30 days)
  • Strong leadership and team management skills
  • Excellent knowledge of cooking techniques, food safety, and kitchen operations
  • Ability to work under pressure and manage multiple priorities
  • Strong organizational and communication skills

Work Environment

  • High-volume, fast-paced kitchen environment
  • Exposure to heat, sharp equipment, and kitchen machinery
  • Flexible schedule required, including evenings, weekends, and holidays

Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary Range: $68,000-$80,000 per year, commensurate based on experience.
  • Health & Wellness: Medical, prescription, dental, vision, health savings account (HSA), employee assistance program (EAP), accident, critical illness, hospital indemnity, pet insurance benefits, transportation benefits and eligibility to participate in discounted parking rate program. The company contributes $350 per month toward employee-only medical coverage and pays 100% of employee-only premiums for the Dental Low Plan and Vision Plan.
  • 401k Program with Match: Company matches $1 for $1 up to $1,000 per calendar year.
  • Paid Time Off: 3 weeks paid vacation 
  • Paid Sick Leave: 1 week paid sick leave
  • Employee Referral Program: Eligible employees may receive up to $500 for every hourly referral and up to $1,000 for every salary referral after referred employee has completed 6 months of continuous employment.
