Position Overview:
The Assistant Teacher supports the Group Leader in maintaining a safe, structured, and engaging aftercare environment. This role focuses on assisting with student supervision, activity support, and classroom management to ensure smooth daily operations. Assistant Teachers play a key role in supporting student engagement and helping create a positive and inclusive program experience.

 

 

Key Responsibilities:

1. Student Supervision & Safety

  • Assist in actively supervising students at all times to ensure safety and well-being.
  • Support attendance tracking, transitions, and dismissal procedures.
  • Help maintain proper student-to-staff ratios under the direction of the Group Leader.
  • Report any injuries, incidents, or concerns to the Group Leader or site leadership immediately.

2. Program Support

  • Assist with the facilitation of daily activities, including enrichment, homework time, and structured play.
  • Help prepare materials and set up activities as directed by the Group Leader.
  • Support student participation and engagement during activities.

3. Behavior & Classroom Support

  • Reinforce program expectations and assist with behavior management strategies.
  • Provide additional support to students who may need help staying engaged or on task.
  • Redirect minor behaviors and communicate ongoing concerns to the Group Leader.

4. Classroom Environment

  • Help maintain a clean, organized, and structured classroom environment.
  • Support transitions between activities and spaces to ensure smooth program flow.
  • Assist in creating a positive and inclusive atmosphere for all students.

5. Team Collaboration

  • Work closely with the Group Leader and site staff to support daily operations.
  • Follow direction from the Group Leader, Assistant Site Director, and Site Director.
  • Participate in trainings and meetings as required.

 

 

Key Expectations:

  • Be actively engaged with students at all times (no passive supervision)
  • Follow direction and support the Group Leader effectively
  • Maintain professionalism, reliability, and a positive attitude
  • Be flexible and willing to support where needed across the site

 

 

Qualifications:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Experience working with children preferred (school, camp, childcare, or volunteer settings)
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Reliable, punctual, and team-oriented
  • CPR/First Aid certification preferred (or willingness to obtain)

Education & Credential Requirements (DC OSSE-Aligned):
Candidates must meet one of the following:

  • Associate’s degree or higher from an accredited institution; OR
  • High school diploma (or equivalent) with a current Child Development Associate (CDA) credential; OR
  • High school diploma (or equivalent) with certification in early childhood education from a vocational program and willingness to obtain a CDA; OR
  • High school diploma (or equivalent) with at least 1 year of supervised experience working in a licensed child development center (or equivalent), and willingness to obtain a CDA
