What are the responsibilities and job description for the Executive Director position at The Friends of the Salt Lake County Children's Justice Center?
Organization Overview
"The Friends of the Salt Lake County Children’s Justice Center's mission is to empower child victims and their families to transform trauma into resilience. We do this by supporting the Salt Lake County Children’s Justice Center through program support funds and awareness.”
The CJC program was created in 1991 and is mandated by Utah Law 67-5b-102 to be a public/private partnership as child abuse is a community problem requiring community support. The state partially funds the basic program operations and subcontracts to local county governments for administration. The Salt Lake County CJC is administered by the Salt Lake County District Attorney who manages the state and federal funding sources and provides additional funding for personnel and some operational costs. The Friends exists as a nonprofit dedicated to provide the additional support required to fully fund and operate the CJC programs. Through fundraising and grant writing efforts, the Friends provide funding to support critical staff positions to deliver crisis services and specialized forensic interviewing, client emergency funds, furnishings and toys, contracted language translation services, specialized training for staff, office supplies, technical recording equipment, and capital projects. The Friends nonprofit has a collaborative partnership with the CJC Program and District Attorney Office to achieve awareness that benefits victims of crime, and funding that sustains the program success.
Program Overview
The CJC is an award-winning program that provides a successful multi-disciplinary team response for 1,700 children ages 17 and under who have been victims of serious physical abuse, shaken baby, sexual abuse and exploitation, drug endangerment, domestic violence, witness to domestic violence or a violent crime, trafficking and child homicide, and more. Each year, over 3,700 children, teens, and family members walk through their doors seeking help, healing, and guidance after they have been a victim of or witnessed a serious crime.
The program provides comprehensive services which empower children so that small voices can be heard in the criminal justice system. Rather than going to a police station, which can be traumatic for a child, children come to the CJC for supportive, wraparound services, including:
- A forensic interview, conducted by a trained, dedicated professional, in a soothing, child-friendly setting which enables children to tell their story and safely seek justice after a crime has been committed against them.
- Medical examination services by expert medical staff who help reassure children and families of their health and ability to recover physically from abuse.
- Client Emergency Funds are engaged on an as-needed basis to families requiring immediate stabilization, so they are able to access food, clothing, shelter, and safety after a crisis.
- Connection to trauma-informed therapists and victim reparation funds to ensure financial strain on the family is not a barrier to accessing essential mental health services.
- A team of professionals meet to review the case, discuss how to best ensure the safety and wellbeing of the child, and support prosecution efforts to hold the offender accountable.
- Case management teams provide support throughout the criminal justice process to ensure the child and family members are adjusting well and to provide referral to any additional resources that are needed.
