Position: Education Assistant
Reports to: Director of Education
Our Mission:
To preserve, restore, interpret, share, and celebrate the unique cultural, historical, and spiritual qualities of ʻIolani Palace and its grounds for the benefit of Native Hawaiians, the people of Hawaiʻi, and the world.
Summary of Position:
Under the direction of the Director of Education, the Education Assistant assists in facilitating field trips to ‘Iolani Palace and implements public educational offerings in pursuit of the mission, including programming for field trips, community events, and outreach.
Job Responsibilities:
· Correspond with field trip group points of contact to plan visits and match groups with appropriate programming available to them, such as activities, lessons, and tours.
· Work with other front-of-house staff to facilitate the experience of visiting schools during field trips, including greeting, orientation and enforcing schedules.
· Assist in guiding educational programming designed by the Education Department in collaboration with Curatorial staff and the Historian. Programming includes a variety of on- and off-site delivery methods for diverse audiences, such as dramatic storytelling, specialized tours, arts-and-crafts activities, and games, among others. Audiences include K-12 school groups, community groups and Palace visitors of all ages.
· Prepare program and activity materials for use during field trips or special events, track the inventory of essential materials and request replacements, as needed.
· Work with other staff and volunteers to facilitate educational programming during community events such as Kamaʻāina Sundays.
· Assist with the development and assessment of programming to suit the needs of visitors, including K-12 students, guests of special events, and other visitors to the Palace.
· Support staffing needs for special extended-hour events and facility rentals, as needed.
Qualifications and Requirements:
· Bachelor’s degree in Hawaiian Studies, Pacific Island History, Education or closely related field.
· 3 to 5 years of demonstrated experiences and success in the implementation of formal (classroom) or informal (museum programming) educational programs.
· 1 to 3 years of experience in customer service.
· Cultural competency, knowledge of Hawaiian history, culture, and pronunciation of Hawaiian language.
· Knowledge and application of instructional methods that are grounded in ʻike Hawaiʻi / kuanaʻike Hawaiʻi / loina Hawaiʻi.
· Strong written and verbal communication skills
· General competency in Microsoft Office, Google web applications and other common digital tools.
· After hiring, complete an ‘Iolani Palace docent training course when available
General Physical Requirements:
· Ability to climb stairs
· Ability to lift up to 50 lbs
· Ability to sit, walk, or stand for most of an 8-hour workday
