2nd Assistant

JOB SUMMARY:

Directs and participates in the maintenance of the golf course tees, greens, fairways, and cart paths.  Supervises the golf course maintenance (GCM) crew and does other related work as required.  Serves as the direct supervisor of Golf Course Interns. Tracks all scientific data used on the golf course (moisture, clipping yield, etc.) and uses data to recommend procedures.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Daily Planning: Assist in planning and prioritizing the daily schedule for golf course property within the area of responsibility.
   1. Schedules the work crew. 
   2. Responsible for 20-25 full-time employees in the absence of the Golf Course Superintendent.
   3. Regularly supervises teams of 5-8 employees daily.
2. Staff Supervision: Supervise golf maintenance staff to maximize efficiency and the use of man-hours, occasionally performing duties based on staff availability.
   1. Oversees completion of various work assignments and assists in field decisions regarding job procedures, work standards and machinery use.
   2. Enforces safe working methods.  Reports disciplinary problems to the GCS and/or 1st Assistant GCS.
3. Deputy Superintendent: Serve as the Superintendent's or Assistant's capacity during their absence.
4. Pesticide Applications: Supervise pesticide applications, calibrate and/or operate pesticide application equipment, and mix chemicals and fertilizers for application.
5. Equipment Security: Ensure all equipment is secure from theft and protected from weather conditions at the end of each day.
6. Pump House Monitoring: Monitor the pump house and transfer pump.
7. Landscaping: Coordinate landscaping duties with the Landscape Superintendent.
   1. Must know proper maintenance procedures and basic agronomic practices for greens, fairways, tees, lakes, roughs, bunkers, and all other appropriate areas. 
   2. Supervises and participates in the operation and maintenance of irrigation pumps and irrigation and drainage systems.
8. Inventory Management: Track golf course supplies.
9. Experimentation: Monitor experimentation under the supervision of the Director.
10. Continuing Education: Participate in continuing education seminars as recommended by the Director.
11. Irrigation Knowledge: Possess a working knowledge of the irrigation system for repairs and programming functions.
12. Other Duties: Perform any other duties as assigned.
13. Keeps current with new ideas, equipment, fertilizers, chemicals, etc., through publications, seminars and professional development opportunities.
14. A complete team player that is willing to assist other departments accomplish the overall goals of the Ford Field and River Club to provide the highest standards of service to its members.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Ensures that all members, guests and co-workers are treated in a friendly and respectful manner in accordance with the standards of excellence of The Ford Field and River Club.
2. Assists in other departments and performs additional related duties as required.
3. Understands and follows policies and procedures of the department and The Ford Field and River Club overall.

    

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND QUALIFIATIONS:

1. High school diploma required.  AA or BA in turf management preferred.
2. Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills for a high degree of interaction with employees, management and members.
3. Must be able to supervise a large work crew.
4. Must have thorough working knowledge of all aspects of golf course maintenance, equipment, turf, seeding, irrigation systems, drainage control, fertilizers, herbicides, and pest control methods.  May require pesticide applicator licensing.
5. Requires ability to order supplies, supervise work crews, basic knowledge of machinery maintenance, and basic landscape design and maintenance.
6. Requires a valid driver’s license.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Standing, stooping, bending, pushing and pulling.  Lifts 50 pounds occasionally up to 100 pounds.  Vision must be correctable to read and write.  Hearing must be sufficient to understand conversation on the telephone in a noisy environment.  Must have ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time.  Able to work days, evenings, weekends and holidays as required.
