Position Available

The Food Research & Action Center (FRAC) seeks a talented anti-hunger, nutrition, and anti-poverty advocate to temporarily assist FRAC’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) team for six months. This position reports to the Director of SNAP Policy and Advocacy.

 

The successful candidate will bring knowledge of SNAP and a commitment to ensuring that the program is accessible to eligible individuals in order to bolster food security, health and well-being, serve customers with dignity, and make positive impacts for a robust and equitable economy.  This position offers opportunities to work with FRAC’s national, state, and local partners and to learn from experienced SNAP experts and advocates.   

 

Organizational Background

FRAC works to improve the nutrition, health, and well-being of people struggling against poverty-related hunger in the United States through advocacy, partnerships, and by advancing bold and equitable policy solutions. To attain this mission, FRAC engages in research, policy analysis and advocacy, coalition-building, outreach, technical assistance and training, and an array of communications strategies. In partnership with hundreds of national, state, and local nonprofit organizations, public agencies, corporations, and labor organizations, FRAC addresses hunger and food insecurity, and poverty as their root cause.

 

 

Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Provide appropriate information, technical assistance, analysis, training, strategic advice, and other hands-on support to national, state and community-based organizations, state and local government agencies, private nonprofit organizations, and activists regarding ways to strengthen SNAP’s access, benefit adequacy, reach, and quality customer service. 
  • Provide support to the team’s work to evaluate existing or proposed legislation, regulations, policies and practices to determine ways and provide guidance to defend, improve and expand SNAP’s positive impacts.
  • Support efforts to identify policy changes to streamline, improve accessibility, and increase SNAP compliance.
  • Write and/or assist with persuasive analytic and research materials, guides, outreach materials, and reports for use by advocates, government agencies, policy makers, service providers, and the media.  
  • Make presentations to diverse audiences on SNAP access, benefit adequacy, and quality customer service.
  • Provide support to other program areas and departments assigned by the Director of SNAP Policy and Advocacy.
  • Represent FRAC at coalition and partner meetings.
  • Assist in managing regrants to national, state, and local nonprofits and provide technical assistance to the regrantees.   
  • Manage administrative tasks of the SNAP team, as assigned by the director.
  • Other performance tasks as assigned.  

 

Skills and Experience  

The ideal candidate will possess the following characteristics: 

  • Minimum 2 years of experience in advocacy, program operations, policy analysis, and/or organizing.
  • A bachelor’s degree.
  • Experience in nonprofit, government or policy work is strongly preferred.
  • Ability to evaluate policies, processes, or programs to identify issues and recommend solutions.
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team.
  • Demonstrated ability to think and act strategically.
  • Familiarity with SNAP programs preferred.
  • Capacity to tap input and engagement from people with lived experience with hunger and poverty strongly preferred.
  • Experience with public benefits and outreach also preferred.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.

  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Unquestioned integrity, a high level of energy, and a sense of humor.
  • A commitment to social justice.

 

Salary/Benefits

This is a six-month temporary position with a total salary of $35,000, and health insurance is included. FRAC’s normal office hours are between 9:00 am and 5:30 pm Eastern. This is a non-union position and is not covered by the collective bargaining agreement.

 


 

Opening/Closing Dates

The position is available immediately. It will close when it is filled. However, FRAC seeks to hire a qualified individual as soon as possible.
