BACKGROUND

The Food Bank of North Alabama is a nonprofit, tax exempt charity affiliated with Feeding America. We procure, warehouse and distribute food to the ill, children and those struggling with food insecurity. Each year we distribute 13 million meals to people in North Alabama through a network of more than 250 charitable feeding programs – including food pantries, soup kitchens and children backpack programs. We also pursue proactive solutions to end hunger and poverty through initiatives aimed at supporting local farmers and improving our local food system.

A brief definition of some terms:

1. Mobile Pantry – A temporary food pantry set up for distribution in a parking lot or other location such as a school, or community center. During these events, the Food Bank typically serves between 150-1,000 people by distributing food boxes and fresh produce on site. These events require pre-planning and coordination between multiple teams within the Food Bank and community partners.

2. Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP) – A federal program for low-income senior residents. This program is operated by the Food Bank and partner agencies. The program requires intense oversight as it is a federal program. Food Bank staff conduct distributions of senior food boxes locally in Huntsville and oversee partner agencies’ distributions of senior food boxes in other locations within our service area.

3. Summer Meals – A program to provide meals to kids 18 and younger at sites across our service area, typically, schools, churches, or community centers, during the summer months when school is not in session.

4. School Pantry – A food pantry set up within a school and run by either volunteers, school administrators, teachers, or a combination of all.

5. Food Bank of North Alabama Market- The Food Bank’s permanent client-choice pantry located at 2000 Vernon Ave., managed by the Special Programs team but run by volunteers.
