The Florida Bar Journal & News Department is looking for a talented storyteller and meticulous wordsmith to join the team as an Associate Editor. Do you have strong writing skills? Are you a stickler for proper use of grammar, spelling, and punctuation? Are you interested in legal citation styles and scholarly texts? Then the Bar Journal & News wants to talk to you about joining the team. The Associate Editor is responsible for improving the quality of two publications, the News and Journal — by taking on everything from writing assignments to proofreading to laying out copy and images into InDesign. The department takes on the pivotal role of keeping the legal community informed and educated about the profession on a daily basis, both online and in print.
Required minimum education:
Bachelor's Degree in English or Journalism (proof of degree required at interview).
Required minimum professional work experience:
Two (2) years of editorial and writing experience.
Must submit a writing sample and resume with the on-line application.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
Proofs and edits all Journal copy for style (including citation style), grammar, punctuation, and effective writing. Incorporates authors' revisions and other editors' corrections. Lays out Journal articles in InDesign.
Proofs and edits all News copy for style, grammar, punctuation, and effective writing.
Facilitates the administration of the Editorial Board peer review process of feature article submissions to the Journal. Duties include: Article intake, including communication with authors, staff editors, and the public; Redacting personal information from articles and forms to ensure the blind review process; Sending assignments to select reviewers and enforcing deadlines; Tracking article progress through management software; Maintaining electronic records including author files and Editorial Board member participation.
Works with the Bar President to write and prepare the Journal's President's page for publication, and other writing assignments as assigned.
Coordinates book reviews and synopses for Bar Journal and Monitor the Wufu program, used for sending pre-electronic Journal articles to members who request them online.
Other duties as assigned.
