Time Allocation: ≈70% client delivery / controller work, ≈30% training, QA, and staff development
Position Summary
The Finance Squad is an outsourced accounting, bookkeeping, and CFO/controller services firm serving growing businesses across the country. We are looking for a Controller who does two things well: runs high-quality controller-level work for an assigned client portfolio, and builds the training and review discipline that raises the level of our whole delivery team.
This is not a training-only role. It is a senior accounting seat with a formal responsibility to shorten ramp time for new staff, tighten the quality of work leaving the team, and reduce the number of preventable mistakes that reach clients. Roughly 70% of this role's time is direct client and controller-level work; roughly 30% is structured training, quality review, and staff development.
Essential Functions - Client Delivery (≈70%)
- Own controller-level oversight for an assigned portfolio of clients: month-end close, reconciliations, financial statement accuracy, and reporting timelines.
- Review and approve work prepared by bookkeepers and staff accountants before it reaches the client.
- Manage AP/AR oversight, cash flow visibility, and escalate red flags to the CEO or CFO lead before they become client-facing problems.
- Serve as the senior point of contact for assigned clients — timely, accurate, and proactive communication, no vague status updates.
- Identify and correct process breakdowns, weak controls, or recurring errors within assigned client engagements.
- Partner with CFO-level staff on forecasting, budgeting, and strategic financial insight where needed.
Essential Functions - Training & Quality (≈30%)
- Build and maintain a structured onboarding curriculum for new bookkeepers and staff accountants, covering our software stack, close process, and client communication standards.
- Run a defined 30/60/90-day ramp plan for new hires, with clear milestones and sign-off checkpoints.
- Perform periodic quality-assurance review of work product across the team — not just your own clients — and report patterns of error or risk to leadership.
- Coach existing staff accountants and bookkeepers on technical gaps identified through QA review or client feedback.
- Maintain and improve documented SOPs for close, reconciliation, and reporting processes.
- Contribute to a staff scorecard system that tracks accuracy, timeliness, and client responsiveness.
What Success Looks Like
- Assigned client portfolio consistently hits close deadlines with no repeat, avoidable errors.
- New hires reach independent competency measurably faster than current onboarding timelines.
- A visible drop in errors and rework caught downstream by managers or clients rather than in QA review.
- Clients on this Controller's book report strong communication and no unresolved red flags.
Qualifications
- 7–10 years of progressive accounting experience, including controller-level or senior review responsibility.
- Multi-client, outsourced accounting or CAS firm experience strongly preferred.
- Strong working knowledge of QuickBooks Online and/or Xero; comfortable across multiple client tech stacks.
- Demonstrated ability to review others' work critically and explain the "why," not just correct the "what."
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance preferred; CPA not required.
- Comfortable operating in a fast-moving, high-accountability, in-office environment.
What We are Looking For
This role fits someone who is coachable, direct, and takes ownership without needing to be managed closely — someone who can hold a client accountable and a junior teammate accountable in the same week, calmly and clearly. We have little patience for ego, avoidance, or people who need heavy oversight to do the job right. We have a lot of room for someone who wants to build something and doesn't need hand-holding to do it.
