Teacher of Students with Disabilities

The Fedcap Group
Orange, NJ Full Time
POSTED ON 3/6/2026
AVAILABLE BEFORE 5/6/2026

What You’ll Do

A Teacher of Students with Disabilities (TWSD) is a Special Education teacher who works with students who require additional assistance due to their varying disabilities, such as emotional, learning, mental, physical, and social developmental issues. The needs of the classroom will vary each year depending on the unique students who are enrolled in the school at any given time. Some students may have more severe cases than others, and students in the classroom will be representative of many different ages.

These teachers often focus on basic skill development, including effective communication techniques and literacy improvements. Teachers must adapt their lesson plans from the general education requirements. These teachers must then find the best ways to reach each student in their class with different approaches customized to the needs of each student. Part of the special education teacher’s responsibility is to provide the best education possible given student and classroom restrictions and to help these students be able to live more independently over time.

Your Responsibilities Will Include:

  • To assist in carrying out the mission of the school to empower positive behavior in our students, assist them with coping skills, assure that all elements of each student’s Individual Educational Plan (IEP) is updated regularly, followed and remains in compliance.
  • As a member of The Fedcap School Faculty, and under the supervision of the Principal, the TWSD is responsible primarily for providing curriculum and instruction in either a subject area or to an elementary classroom of Middle School students.
  • The TWSD is the support resource staff member for access services such as peer/family counseling and support, screening, assessment, brief treatment, consultative services, education and engagement, linkages, outreach and advocacy.
  • In addition, every staff member may:
    • Report suspected child and elder abuse and follow up on all such reports.
    • Supervision of interns.
    • Other duties as assigned by supervisor, service providers, and other relevant agencies on topics and issues related to domestic violence and sexual assault.

You’re a great fit for this role if you have:

Cumulative GPA Requirement. New Jersey requires that candidates for certification achieve a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 when a GPA of 4.00 equals an A grade for students graduating on or after September 1, 2016 (2.75 for those graduating before September 1, 2016) in a baccalaureate degree program, higher degree program, or a State-approved postbaccalaureate certification program with a minimum of 13 semester-hour credits.

The Teacher of Students with Disabilities endorsement is not a standalone certificate. Candidates need to hold a CE, CEAS or standard NJ instructional certificate with an endorsement appropriate to the subject or grade level to be taught.
