Position Summary:
In this position as Senior Staff Accountant, you will serve as a key member of the Finance team, functioning at an advanced operational and compliance level to lead complex accounting processes and ensure financial integrity across The Family Place's multi-fund nonprofit environment. You'll oversee government and restricted fund accounting, lead components of monthly and year-end close processes, and manage high-risk financial areas including grant compliance, revenue recognition, and cost allowability under Uniform Guidance (2 CFR 200). Partner cross-functionally with program leadership, Development, and external auditors to produce timely financial reports, variance analyses, and spend projections that support strategic decision-making. You'll maintain strong internal controls, prepare complex journal entries and balance sheet reconciliations, support Form 990 preparation and year-end audits, and provide technical guidance to finance and program staff.

Key Responsibilities:
Grant Management & Compliance
- Monitor grant budgets versus actual expenditures and project future spending needs to ensure optimal fund utilization.
- Prepare accurate and timely grant billing and reporting in full compliance with funder requirements.
- Maintain detailed grant documentation to support compliance audits and funder inquiries
Financial Operations & Reconciliations
- Lead month-end and year-end close processes, ensuring accuracy and timeliness of all financial reporting.
- Reconcile bank accounts, investment portfolio accounts, and related financial statements.
- Prepare and verify journal entries for accounts receivable, grants receivable, prepaid expenses, pledges, non-government grants, and accrued liabilities.
- Record, maintain, and reconcile the agency's fixed asset activities and depreciation schedules to ensure accurate accounting.
- Ensure all account reconciliations are timely, well-documented, and audit-ready.
Audit Support & Compliance
- Coordinate the timely completion of audit schedules and provide comprehensive support during year-end audits.
- Maintain organized documentation and supporting schedules to facilitate external audit processes.
- Respond to auditor inquiries and ensure all findings are addressed promptly.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Partner with the Development Team to reconcile accounting software with the fundraising database monthly.
- Provide technical advice, assistance, and cross-training to other accounting personnel as needed.
- Serve as backup for accounts payable processing to ensure continuity of operations.
Continuous Improvement & Professional Development
- Attend ongoing training sessions to stay current on accounting standards, grant compliance, and nonprofit financial management.
- Participate in employee meetings and contribute to departmental goals.
- Prepare ad hoc reports and complete special projects as assigned.

Qualifications:- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or related field.
- Minimum of 15 credit hours in accounting coursework required.
- Minimum 5–7 years of progressive accounting experience.
- Experience supporting external audits; Single Audit experience strongly preferred.
- Aptitude to work with a $20 million budget.
- Nonprofit or government-funded environment experience preferred, but not required.
Licenses or Certifications:
Valid Texas Driver’s License
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit fund accounting principles.
- Working knowledge of Uniform Guidance (2 CFR 200) preferred.
- Advanced Excel skills (pivot tables, lookups, data analysis).
- Ability to analyze complex financial data and translate findings for non-finance leaders.
- High attention to detail with strong analytical and organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently, prioritize effectively, and meet critical deadlines.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Sound judgment and discretion in handling confidential information.
- Ability to communicate to and interact effectively with co-workers, managers, and other stakeholders sufficient to convey information and to receive work direction.
Mental and Physical Duties:
Duties are usually performed while sitting, with occasional periods of standing or walking.
Working Conditions:
Work is performed primarily in a professional office environment at The Family Place due to the confidential nature of financial and grant documentation. Duties are largely sedentary with occasional lifting (up to 25 lbs). Regular interaction with staff and external partners is required.
Essential Personnel Designation: Non-Essential
Non-essential employees will follow Dallas Independent School District (DISD) closure/delay decisions and are expected to work remotely or use PTO during inclement weather. Refer to The Family Place Inclement Weather Policy for complete details.
