Job Description

Reports to a Deputy General Counsel. Responsible for providing legal advice regarding worker's compensation claims and litigation under the Longshore and Harbor Workers' Compensation Act (LHWCA) as extended by the Nonappropriated Fund Instrumentalities Act, and issues involving Occupational Safety and Health.

Job Qualifications

Professional law degree (Juris Doctorate/JD) from a recognized and accredited law school. Member of the bar of the highest court of a state or the District of Columbia. Five years of legal experience in the Longshore & Harbor Workers' Compensation Act (LHWCA) claims as a licensed and practicing attorney.

Major Duties

Represents the Exchange in various settings to include Federal Court, Department of Labor-Office of Workers' Compensation, and applicable OSHA venues.

Analyzes established legislation, prepares legal documents, reviews agency policies, and advises management on legal matters.

Oversees third-party claims administrator in relation to workers' compensation and related legal issues.

Practices preventive law which may include developing and conducting educational sessions regarding prevention of litigation and recommends changes to policy.

Ensures compliance with applicable laws and regulations. Provides analysis of current and proposed laws and policy and provides counsel to leadership.

Performs other duties as assigned.
