Responsibilities

• Deliver high-quality interpretation services in American Sign Language (ASL) across multiple contexts, including educational, medical, legal, and community settings.
• Facilitate communication through simultaneous interpretation, interpreting spoken language into ASL in real-time during live conversations or events.
• Conduct consecutive interpretation by listening to segments of speech and conveying the message accurately in ASL or spoken language afterward.
• Provide over-the-phone interpretation (OPI) to support remote communication needs promptly and efficiently.
• Maintain professional ethics by respecting confidentiality, impartiality, and cultural sensitivity at all times.
• Adapt interpretation style to suit different audiences, ensuring clarity and cultural appropriateness.
• Collaborate with clients to understand specific needs and tailor your approach accordingly.

Requirements

• Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) with demonstrated fluency and cultural competency.
• Strong command of English, including advanced communication skills and linguistic understanding.
• Experience with interpretation techniques such as simultaneous, consecutive, and over-the-phone interpretation.
• Multilingual abilities are a plus, especially proficiency in additional languages relevant to diverse communities.
• Knowledge of professional ethics standards for interpreters, including confidentiality and impartiality.
• Familiarity with educational interpretation practices and translation skills are highly desirable.
• Excellent listening skills, attention to detail, and the ability to interpret complex information accurately under pressure.
• A background in linguistics or related fields enhances your effectiveness as an interpreter.
