Edwardsville and Glen Carbon are two of the few growing communities in southwestern Illinois, and there are several businesses, subdivisions, and apartments under construction with even more on the way.
The Edwardsville Intelligencer is seeking a highly motivated and community-focused journalist to cover city government and economic development in Edwardsville and Glen Carbon — two of the fastest-growing communities in the Metro East.
This beat offers rich reporting opportunities, with multiple housing developments underway, new medical clinics coming to Glen Carbon, and a wave of national retailers and restaurants entering the area. Our goal isn’t just to report what’s coming — but to investigate how rapid growth is affecting residents, from traffic congestion and infrastructure strain to property tax changes and quality of life.

Responsibilities And Duties
- Cover city council and committee meetings in both Edwardsville and Glen Carbon.
- Report on business and development trends, including housing, retail, health care, and local infrastructure.
- Explore the broader impact of growth on the community — both positive and negative.
- Lead the newsroom’s efforts to cover breaking news
- Attend community events to engage with readers and generate human-centered story ideas.
- Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications or related field required, or other degree and related experience.
- Knowledge of media production, communication, and dissemination techniques and methods. This includes alternative ways to inform and entertain via written, oral, and visual media.
- Knowledge and use of AP Style
- Willing to relocate to the Edwardsville/Glen Carbon Area
- Knowledge in maintaining and driving a digital-first thinking in the newsroom to being able to study and determine trends based on analytics.
- Understanding the implications of new information for both current and future problem-solving and decision-making.
- Ability to take photos for print and online use.
- Selecting and using training/instructional methods and procedures appropriate for the situation when learning or teaching new things.
- Understanding written sentences and paragraphs in work related documents, and asking questions if something isn’t clear
- Communicating effectively in writing as appropriate for the needs of the audience.
- Requires meeting strict deadlines.
