Teacher’s Assistant

Early Learning Center at Saints Peter and Paul Lutheran Church, Houghton, MI
General Description:
We are looking for a Christian who is teachable, and who genuinely loves working with young children (birth through seven years). Assistants are essential team members who support our teachers and the director in achieving care and educational goals. Additionally, as this job is part of a greater ministry of Saints Peter and Paul Lutheran Church, all staff are expected to demonstrate Christ’s love through their actions. All conduct while onsite should be loving and caring.
Professional Qualifications :
- Ability to care for up to 10 children unsupervised, after training.
- Child Development Associate Certification (Preferred, but not required)
- 1 year of childcare preferred (your pay increases based on experience and training)
Personal Qualifications:
- Sincere, authentic, innate interest in working with children; Christ-like love for these families.
- Possessional stamina, both physical and emotional, to work with children. This position includes physically lifting children, helping with potty duties, assisting at the lunch table, monitoring recess duties, and playing alongside the children.
- Initiative and competence in working effectively without close supervision. After completing training, you should be able to complete your duties without direct instructions from your supervisor. Questions are encouraged, as well as asking for help when you are unsure/need more direction or rest/breaks.
- Flexibility with assigned roles/tasks as they relate to children’s developing needs.
- Gracious and understanding toward other co-workers.
- Growth-mindset; excited to complete yearly professional development for team improvement.
- Current CPR certification or willingness to obtain it within 60 days.
- Previous experience with special education inclusion and accommodation practices and/or willingness to work with children with special needs.
Accountability :
- Reports directly to the Lead Teacher
Essential Job Functions include, but are not limited to:
- Support and assist students and teachers in achieving educational goals
- Work together with fellow staff to build strong relationships with each other, the students, and the classroom environment itself.
- Practice, promote, and enforce the policies established in the school handbook.
- Lead nap/rest time after children are asleep.
- Wake the children and help them re-join the awake group.
- Take children to the bathroom and assist them as needed.
- Assist students in washing hands and staying at the table during snack.
- Clean eating area after snack (wash, rinse and sanitize placemats, tables, dishes).
- Give play guidance, mediate conflicts during play so the teacher can do assessments.
- Help children get ready to go outside. Supervise outside.
- Make sure shared spaces (i.e. gym and hallway) are cleaned.
- Tidy the rooms (return items to their shelves, bins).
- Wipe down surfaces (wash, rinse, sanitize).
- Wash and sanitize mouthed items.
- As needed: Vacuum and change garbage
Job Type: Part-time
Pay: $12.50 - $16.00 per hour
