NATURE AND SCOPE:
The Director of Education and Public Engagement plans and evaluates all education initiatives, including but not limited to, education events, tours and field trips, volunteer programs, camps, digital programming, and community outreach initiatives. This role is responsible for building and maintaining relationships with universities, schools, teachers, and education service organizations within the region. The Director of Education and Public Engagement is responsible for the oversight of the education team, establishing departmental goals, and interacting regularly with customers, donors, and vendors, as well as regional and national museum partners. The Director of Education and Public Engagement works collaboratively with department leads to provide programming content and support for exhibitions and events. This position is responsible for effectively communicating information between departments and within the Education Department when appropriate.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Direct the Museum’s education strategy to continuously provide programming that is appealing to schools, parents, and youth, as well as adults and life-long learners.
- Develop and maintain internal and external educational programs, classes and resources that meet the needs of area and national school districts and community groups while establishing strong relationships with schools, teachers, and education service organizations.
- Develop curriculum-based programming and related classes, tours, camps, and education outreach initiatives.
- Develop gallery guides and tours for temporary exhibitions and train staff/volunteers for each exhibition.
- Oversee special projects and grant-funded programs to ensure objectives are met and reporting is completed on a timely basis.
- Develop effective strategies to generate consistent revenue streams for all programming, evaluating the operational and financial outcomes of each activity.
- Establish annual departmental goals and is responsible for the execution of those goals.
- Support the Museum’s overall strategies and operational activities within the Education Public Engagement division.
- Participate in all mandatory training and safety programs required and provided by the Museum.
- Responsible for department and program budgets as approved by the Board of Directors of the Museum for all areas of responsibility.
- All other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- 3-5 years of education leadership experience or training that would ensure the required knowledge and abilities.
- Bachelor’s degree in education with actively maintained certifications required.
- Ability to relate to and effectively communicate with diverse demographics.
- Possess great written and verbal communication skills.
- Highly developed organization skills with demonstrated ability to prioritize tasks and manage workflow for efficient operations.
- Effective in collaborative team environments internally and with external customers.
- Skilled in Microsoft Office products including Excel, PowerPoint, and Word; and familiar with customer management software, Altru preferred.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Full-time exempt position scheduled to work Monday through Friday and as needed to facilitate programming and events.
- Routine periods of sitting, standing, and walking are required.
- Must be able to climb ladders, lift up to 40 pounds, go up and down stairs, and sit or stand for extended periods.
