Task Force Building Engineer (Temporary)
Location: The Doyle Hotel – Charlottesville, VA
Position Type: Temporary / Project-Based (20–30 Hours per Week)
Pay: $30–$40/hour (DOE)
Position Summary
The Doyle Hotel is seeking an experienced Chief Engineer to provide engineering leadership during a hotel transition. This is a full time, project-based position focused on completing identified maintenance projects, supporting daily engineering coverage, and ensuring the hotel remains fully operational for guests. The ideal candidate is an experienced hotel engineer who can independently troubleshoot building systems while also completing guest room repairs and preventative maintenance.
Responsibilities
- Complete assigned engineering projects and deferred maintenance items
- Provide engineering coverage during scheduled time off or peak operational periods
- Troubleshoot and repair hotel building systems, including HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and mechanical equipment
- Perform preventative maintenance throughout the property
- Complete guest room repairs including lighting, plumbing, doors, locks, blinds, furniture, and fixtures
- Support fire life safety systems through routine inspections and minor repairs (fire alarm, emergency lighting, extinguishers, etc.)
- Coordinate with outside vendors when specialized repairs are required
- Work closely with Housekeeping and Operations to return guestrooms to service quickly
- Maintain accurate maintenance records and communicate project updates
Qualifications
- 4 years of general maintenance experience, preferably in hotels, commercial buildings, or multi-unit residential properties
- Strong knowledge of HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and general building maintenance
- Experience with hotel engineering operations and preventative maintenance programs preferred
- Familiarity with fire life safety equipment and building systems
- Ability to independently diagnose and resolve maintenance issues
- Comfortable using ladders and working in mechanical spaces
- Reliable transportation
Ideal Candidate
- Hotel Building Engineer, Maintenance Engineer, or Assistant Chief Engineer experience preferred
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities
- Comfortable balancing larger building projects with day-to-day guest room maintenance
- Organized, dependable, and able to work independently
- Takes pride in maintaining a safe, functional, and guest-ready hotel environment
This is a temporary, project-based opportunity averaging 20–30 hours per week, focused on supporting key maintenance projects, preventative maintenance, and engineering coverage during a critical hotel transition. For the right candidate, there is a strong likelihood of a full-time opportunity with the new ownership group following the transition.
Pay: $30.00 - $40.00 per hour
