The Diocese of Charleston
Greenville, SC Full Time
POSTED ON 12/20/2025 CLOSED ON 1/19/2026

What are the responsibilities and job description for the Elementary School Teacher position at The Diocese of Charleston?

"Do you want to do a good deed? Teach the young!

Do you want to perform a holy act? Teach the young!

Do you want to do a holy thing? Teach the young!

Truly, now and for the future, among holy things, this is the holiest."

– St John Bosco

Position Summary: We seek dynamic teachers who desire to contribute to an engaging and joyful school culture and lead young children in academic and spiritual formation. The successful candidate must have a passion for Catholic liberal education, which is matched by their love of teaching and forming elementary school students in the Catholic faith. The ideal candidate will be willing to teach an array of subjects within the disciplines of natural science and mathematics, classical languages (Greek and Latin), literature, history, choral music, art history, studio art, drama, dance, philosophy, and theology. The assigned teaching load will vary depending on the aptitude of the candidate and the school’s needs.

Requirements: Candidates must be practicing Catholics, pursuing a life of virtue and holiness through prayer and the Sacramental life. They must be committed to the moral teaching of the Catholic Church. Catholic schoolteachers love to spend time with children, they are generous, and they know how to manage a classroom, but they should also have the ability and desire to shape the character of their students through a clear teaching of Christian virtue. These are essential for modeling the Christian life to our students.

Candidates should have a desire to contribute to a curriculum rooted in the Catholic liberal arts tradition and organized to reflect the unity of being, truth, beauty, and goodness in the formation of the whole child. The elementary school core curriculum includes English Language Arts; Latin; Catechesis; Mathematics; History; Nature Study (Science); Reasoning (Logic and Philosophy); Music (Choir and Band); Physical Education; Studio Art and Art History; Literature and Drama.

Qualifications: Catholic education requires teachers who are trained in academic disciplines (literature, history, sciences, mathematics, music etc.) and not just in elementary or secondary education. Our vision at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic School is to maintain a faculty that is academically gifted and in full pursuit of intellectual interests because these habits can positively influence students who are by nature looking for intellectual and moral leaders to follow. Highly favored are candidates who are graduates of a classical liberal arts program such as are offered at Thomas Aquinas College, St. John’s College, Thomas More College of the Liberal Arts, and Wyoming Catholic College. Candidates from liberal arts honors colleges such as those at Belmont Abbey College or Baylor University are also encouraged to apply.

A bachelor’s degree (or higher) is required; teaching experience and formation in the classical liberal arts are preferred. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong proficiencies in content knowledge, teaching ability, organizational skills, and written and verbal communications skills. Accompanying these should be a passion to inspire wonder and excellence in students and a sense of the connections between math and science and the humanities. Exceptional candidates who are transitioning from other careers, or recent college graduates will also be considered. A track record of contributing to the vision and mission of an apostolic and educational enterprise is also desirable.

Reflecting on this great vocation, 20th century Jesuit educator, Fr. Robert Schwickerath wrote:

"The teacher's life is a most arduous one. [...] Still, the teacher's mission is one of the greatest importance while touched with sublimity. It is in a way a "priestly" office, for the material on which the teacher works is the mind, the immortal soul of man; his object is truly "sacerdotal," namely to consecrate these souls to their Creator, to make them more God-like in wisdom and moral goodness. The teacher is also entrusted with the destinies of society; the children and youths whom he now trains will one day be the heads of families, the parents of a new generation, the men that powerfully influence public opinion for good or ill, in the press and from the platform, the citizens whose votes will make or mar their country. Surely, this is a profession that deserves the enthusiasm of noble hearts and the absorbing interest of the ablest minds."

If you feel that you have a noble heart, an able mind, and the enthusiasm to mentor and form young children in partnership with their parents to lead them closer to God, we would love to hear from you!
