Position Summary

The Stabilization Specialist supports families experiencing homelessness as they transition from shelter into safe, stable, permanent housing. Working closely with the Housing Specialist and shelter team, this role helps families identify and overcome barriers to housing, navigate housing programs and subsidies, and build the skills and supports needed to maintain long-term housing stability.

This position combines housing navigation, case coordination, advocacy, and community outreach. The Stabilization Specialist works directly with families both in the shelter and in the community, including conducting home visits for up to two years following housing placement to promote sustained success.

The role is relationship-driven, community-based, and mission-focused, requiring strong communication skills, organization, and the ability to work effectively with diverse populations facing complex challenges.

The Mary Eliza Mahoney Family Shelter provides supportive, family-centered emergency housing while helping residents move toward permanent housing and independence through coordinated stabilization services.

Key Responsibilities

Housing Stabilization & Case Support

  • Assist families in identifying barriers to permanent housing and developing individualized housing stabilization plans.
  • Support families in applying for housing programs, subsidies, and community resources.
  • Conduct weekly meetings with families to monitor progress toward housing goals.
  • Provide guidance on tenancy skills, housing expectations, and long-term stability.

Housing Search & Community Engagement

  • Build and maintain relationships with landlords, property managers, housing authorities, and community agencies.
  • Assist families with housing searches, applications, and appointments.
  • Accompany families to housing-related meetings and community services when needed.

Post-Placement Support

  • Conduct home visits with families after housing placement for up to two years to support housing retention.
  • Identify early risks to housing stability and coordinate appropriate interventions.

Documentation & Compliance

  • Maintain accurate and timely records related to housing plans, services provided, and outcomes.
  • Ensure services align with EOHLC regulations and program benchmarks.
  • Protect resident confidentiality and uphold professional boundaries at all times.

Team Collaboration

  • Work collaboratively with case managers, housing staff, and program leadership to support family well-being and safety.
  • Participate in supervision, team meetings, and required trainings.

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree highly preferred; OR
  • High school diploma with at least three years of experience in housing, homelessness services, or human services.

Skills & Requirements

  • Knowledge of homelessness and housing systems preferred.
  • Ability to build professional relationships with landlords and community partners.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Bilingual Spanish/English preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation required.
  • Willingness to travel throughout Boston and surrounding communities.
  • Basic computer proficiency required.

Approved Salary: $18 - $27/hr
