Group Fitness Instructor

POSITION SUMMARY:

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Under the guidance and supervision of the Fitness and Wellness Director, the Fitness Instructor is responsible for guiding beginning and experienced exercisers through the YMCA Fitness Program. The goal of this program is to assist members in making a healthy lifestyle change and to build self-esteem. The role of the Fitness Instructor is to assist members through this process by providing personalized attention, support and motivation. The instructor will provide character development, health education and instruction that will lead to member retention and involvement.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

• Leads energizing, fun, safe, and educational group classes, as directed by the supervisor, to accomplish the YMCA mission and goals.
• Answers questions from members to support them in achieving their goals related to healthy living.
• Maintains working knowledge of wellness and trends to provide effective information and support to members.
• Builds effective, authentic relationships with members; helps members connect with each other and the YMCA.
• Regularly checks all equipment to ensure proper maintenance and cleanliness.
• Keeps accurate class attendance records.
• Follows YMCA policies and procedures; responds to emergency situations.
• Abides by the safety, injury and illness, and prevention guidelines by taking personal responsibility for own safety and safety of program participants.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Requires HS diploma or equivalent.
• Required certifications: CPR, First Aid, AED, national certification (ACE, NETA, AFAA, NASM) in group fitness instruction or YMCA Foundations of Group Exercise certification.
• Certification in areas of expertise.
• At least one year of experience teaching group wellness classes preferred.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

• Ability to conduct classes and activities.
• Ability to perform all physical aspects of the position, including leading class, walking, standing, bending, reaching, and lifting.
• Must be able to comfortably lift and carry at least 25 pounds.
