PURPOSE:

  

The Staff Education and Training Coordinator and Infection Preventionist is responsible for developing, implementing, and evaluating ongoing educational and instructional programs for the campus. The Staff Education Coordinator and Infection Preventionist is responsible for development of reporting for measurement of training needs and results. This position is also responsible for the facility Infection Prevention Control Program.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  

Education and Training

· Assess current and future training/educational and instructional needs across the entire campus to include all disciplines and shifts.

· Assure quality education and training by utilization of authoritative resources and best practices.

· Plan, implement and evaluate programs to meet assessed needs and regulatory requirements.

  • Utilize various training techniques to optimize      staff learning; included may be lecture format, printed materials,      hands-on demonstrations, role-playing, group sessions, one-on-one      training, unit-based instruction, outside trainers etc.
  • Develop continual education      support materials to be used for reference once training has been      completed.

· Develop, implement, teach and evaluate staff competency programs, which will demonstrate accepted practice standards. This is to include annual skills testing. 

· Continually assess, evaluate, implement training progress and training procedures to monitor and analyze course effectiveness and update curriculum as needed.

· Develop benchmarks of program effectiveness and measure that effectiveness through data assessment.

· Consults with managers and supervisors to assess training needs and utilize as a resource for training.

· Provide educational support to all nursing staff personnel consistently throughout their 90-day orientation period and further as needed.

· Coordinate new employee initial and annual tuberculin skin tests and/or screenings to maintain accurate records.

· Promote and coordinate annual flu vaccinations to employees of the campus.

· Perform random screenings per policy.

· Participate in various human resources and quality initiatives and activities as needed. 

· Support employee relations and engagement to ensure practices that maintain positive culture and staff retention.

· Maintains current clinical knowledge and knowledge of LTC & AL licensure requirements in order to ensure that educational information provided to staff is current.

Infection Preventionist

· Collaborate with the facility leadership and the directors to develop, implement, and evaluate the annual infection prevention goals and action plan.

· Partner with leadership, physicians, and local, state and national agencies on activities related to infection prevention.

· Establish a system for the prevention, identification, investigation, and control of infections of residents, staff, and visitors, including surveillance designed to identify possible communicable diseases or infections before they spread.

· Conduct outbreak investigations.

· Maintain a system for reporting possible incidents of communicable diseases to local, state, or national agencies as required, as well as the corrective actions taken.

· Oversee the antibiotic stewardship program and monitor residents’ antibiotic use.

· Assess the need for, develop, and present IPCP in-service education for individual departments, general orientation, and annual review as needed; education includes but not limited to; handy hygiene, cleaning, disinfecting, and sterilizing, specific direct and indirect care settings, therapeutic and diagnostic procedures and devices, use of isolation/barrier precautions when indicated, resident placement, transfer, and discharge, environmental hazards, use of patient care products and medical equipment, and resident immunization programs.

· Assess the need for develop, and implement written policies and procedures for infection control, including those for standard precautions and for transmission-based precautions, including when these should be used, the duration of use, and the type of precautions needed for a particular infection. 

· Enforce policies prohibiting staff with communicable diseases or infected skin lesions from direct contact with residents and their food, and enforce hand hygiene policies consistent with accepted standards of practice.

· Serve as a member of the quality assessment and assurance committee.

· Be accountable for the surveillance of healthcare-acquired and community-acquired infections for residents, staff, volunteers, and visitors.

· Maintain current knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations and ensure that the facility leaders are informed of appropriate issues; understand and comply with infection control, safety, and OSHA procedures and regulations.

· Other duties as assigned by the HR Administrator.

· Obey all federal, state, and local laws.

Requirements

Education: Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing from an accredited school of nursing.

Licensure/ Certification: Current North Carolina licensure as RN or LPN, A.P.I.C. preferred. Wound Care Certification.

Experience: Two years previous geriatric nursing preferred

An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
