The Laboratory System Architect is responsible for the design, implementation, and long-term optimization of information systems that support Munson Healthcare’s laboratory operations. This role ensures that system architecture aligns with laboratory strategic goals, organizational initiatives, and best practices in clinical technology. The architect will evaluate new technologies, drive system upgrades, ensure interoperability with other clinical applications, and deploy solutions that improve efficiency, reliability, and cost-effectiveness. This position requires participation in a regular on-call rotation to support critical laboratory systems.

Contract: 6-month Contract-to-Hire
FTE Conversion Salary: $110,000 – $125,000 (flexible for strong candidates)
Relocation: Candidates willing to relocate to Traverse City accepted
On-Call: Rotation includes 7 evenings one weekend every 6 weeks

This role ensures that system architecture aligns with laboratory strategic goals, organizational initiatives, and best practices in clinical technology. The architect will evaluate new technologies, drive system upgrades, ensure interoperability with other clinical applications, and deploy solutions that improve efficiency, reliability, and cost-effectiveness. This position requires participation in a regular on-call rotation to support critical laboratory systems.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design, develop, and maintain short- and long-term strategies for laboratory-related information systems and supporting software.
- Ensure alignment of system architecture with Munson Healthcare laboratory goals, clinical workflows, and enterprise IT initiatives.
- Lead installation, configuration, upgrading, and maintenance of laboratory operating systems, system software, and interfaces.
- Oversee integration with related clinical applications, including newly implemented systems such as PathNet and other LIS/clinical platforms.
- Conduct research on emerging technologies to enhance system flexibility, performance, and cost-effectiveness.
- Develop technical plans, documentation, and implementation roadmaps for system enhancements and new solutions.
- Collaborate with laboratory leadership, IT teams, clinical staff, and vendors to support system optimization and problem resolution.
- Provide advanced troubleshooting and serve as a subject matter expert for laboratory information systems.
- Participate in an on-call rotation (7 weekday evenings weekend coverage every 6 weeks) to support after-hours system needs.
- Perform basic programming and scripting tasks to support system customization, automation, and data workflows.
- Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology required.
- Minimum 8 years of progressively responsible experience in a laboratory environment.
- At least 3 years of experience supporting clinical information systems, including both hardware and software components.
- Demonstrated experience installing, upgrading, interfacing, and maintaining clinical operating systems and system software.
- Ability to perform basic programming functions and develop scripts or tools to enhance system performance.
- Strong understanding of laboratory workflows, regulatory requirements, and clinical data standards.
- Excellent problem-solving skills, communication abilities, and the capacity to collaborate across clinical and technical teams.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with Cerner/PathNet or similar LIS platforms.
- Previous exposure to multi-application healthcare environments.
- Prior experience in system architecture or enterprise IT planning.
