Middle School Science Teacher

The Crescent Academy is growing and seeking a knowledgeable, engaging, and student-centered Middle School Science Teacher.

We are looking for an educator who can combine strong subject knowledge with thoughtful instruction, clear expectations, and genuine care for students. The teacher will help students build the academic skills, confidence, curiosity, character, and independence needed for success in high school and beyond.

Teachers will prepare and deliver rigorous lessons aligned with New York State's Next Generation Learning Standards, maintain a safe and positive learning environment, assess student progress, communicate regularly with families, and contribute actively to the broader school community. Full-time or part-time opportunities are available.

Key Responsibilities

Curriculum Planning & Instruction

• Develop and deliver well-organized, standards-aligned lessons in the teacher's assigned subject area using the Academy's approved curriculum, instructional resources, and pacing expectations.
• Prepare lesson plans, learning objectives, instructional materials, assignments, projects, and assessments that reflect appropriate academic rigor and clear expectations for student learning.
• Use varied instructional methods, including direct instruction, discussion, modeling, guided practice, collaborative learning, projects, inquiry, technology, and real-world application.
• Differentiate instruction and provide intervention or enrichment so students with varying readiness levels, learning needs, and prior experiences can make meaningful progress.
• Assign purposeful classwork and homework, provide timely feedback, and help students develop effective study, organization, research, and problem-solving habits.
• Science: Engage students in scientific inquiry, observation, experimentation, data analysis, laboratory safety, and evidence-based explanation of scientific concepts.

Assessment & Student Progress

• Use formative and summative assessments to measure understanding, identify learning gaps, monitor progress, and guide instructional decisions.
• Maintain accurate records of grades, assignments, assessment results, interventions, and student progress.
• Provide timely, specific, and constructive feedback that helps students understand their strengths, improve their work, and take greater ownership of learning.
• Prepare progress reports, report-card information, and other required academic documentation accurately and on schedule.

Classroom Environment & Student Support

• Create and maintain a safe, orderly, inclusive, respectful, and intellectually engaging classroom environment.
• Establish clear classroom routines and expectations and use constructive, age-appropriate, and consistent classroom-management practices.
• Promote student responsibility, perseverance, integrity, respect, collaboration, and positive participation.
• Recognize individual student needs and collaborate with school leadership, families, and colleagues to implement appropriate academic or behavioral supports.
• Maintain professional boundaries, protect student confidentiality, and promote the safety and well-being of every child.

Family Communication & Recordkeeping

• Maintain daily attendance and other required classroom and student records.
• Communicate regularly and professionally with parents or guardians regarding student progress, strengths, concerns, missing work, classroom expectations, and opportunities for support at home.
• Participate in parent conferences, student-support meetings, and other school communications as needed.
• Respond to school and family communications in a timely, respectful, and solution-focused manner.

Collaboration & Professional Responsibilities

• Collaborate with colleagues to coordinate curriculum, align expectations, share instructional strategies, and support students across subject areas.
• Participate in staff meetings, professional-development activities, curriculum work, school planning, and required training.
• Reflect on instructional effectiveness, use feedback constructively, and pursue ongoing professional growth.
• Follow the Academy's policies, procedures, curriculum expectations, supervision requirements, and standards of professional conduct.

Enrichment & School Community

• Plan and support projects, competitions, clubs, presentations, field trips, guest-speaker opportunities, and other extracurricular or enrichment experiences connected to student learning.
• Contribute to assemblies, school events, service activities, and community-building initiatives as reasonably assigned.
• Support The Crescent Academy's mission and help maintain a school culture that values academic excellence, kindness, patience, justice, responsibility, and respect.

Required Qualifications

• Demonstrated knowledge of the subject area and the ability to teach middle-school content accurately, clearly, and confidently.
• Ability to plan standards-aligned instruction, assess student learning, manage a classroom effectively, and respond to varied student needs.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to communicate professionally with students, families, colleagues, and school leadership.
• Reliability, punctuality, sound judgment, organization, flexibility, and consistent professional follow-through.
• Commitment to The Crescent Academy's mission, values, policies, curriculum, and professional expectations.
• Ability to successfully complete all applicable background checks, clearances, reference verification, and employment requirements for work in a school setting.

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Education, the assigned subject area, or a related field.
• At least one year of teaching, tutoring, student-teaching, or other structured instructional experience.
• New York State teaching certification or another relevant teaching credential.
• Experience teaching middle-school students in a private, public, charter, religious, or other structured educational setting.
• Familiarity with New York State Next Generation Learning Standards and standards-based curriculum planning and assessment.
• Experience with differentiated instruction, project-based learning, learning-management systems, educational technology, and student-information systems.
• Experience supporting multilingual learners, students with varied learning needs, or students requiring academic intervention or enrichment.
