Position Title: Commercial Estimator (Full-Time | Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM)
Department: Commercial Sales / Operations
Reports To: Branch Manager or Commercial Estimating Manager
Position Summary
The Commercial Estimator is responsible for preparing accurate, competitive, and timely cost estimates for commercial HVAC projects. This role performs detailed load calculations, material takeoffs, system design, ductwork sizing, equipment selection, and job costing based on construction documents and project specifications. The Commercial Estimator works closely with contractors, architects, engineers, sales teams, purchasing, and branch leadership to ensure profitable and technically sound project bids.
The primary focus of this position is performing HVAC load calculations and developing comprehensive job costs derived from those calculations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Estimating & Cost Analysis
- Perform detailed material takeoffs from blueprints, project drawings, and specifications.
- Estimate fabrication costs for sheet metal and ductwork systems.
- Prepare cost estimates for HVAC equipment, accessories, and related components.
- Develop accurate and competitive project bids for commercial customers.
- Analyze project scope and specifications to identify potential cost risks and opportunities.
- Prepare complete job costing packages based on load calculations and takeoffs.
- Review bid documents for completeness and accuracy prior to submission.
Load Calculations & System Design
- Perform HVAC load calculations to determine heating and cooling requirements.
- Design and size ductwork systems to ensure proper airflow and system efficiency.
- Select appropriate HVAC equipment based on project requirements and load calculations.
- Ensure system designs comply with applicable codes, standards, and specifications.
Procurement & Vendor Coordination
- Source non-stock or specialty materials and equipment.
- Coordinate with purchasing to ensure accurate ordering and cost control.
- Obtain vendor quotes and evaluate pricing for competitiveness and accuracy.
- Maintain current product knowledge and catalogs.
Project Review & Collaboration
- Review project plans and specifications from contractors, architects, and engineering firms.
- Clarify discrepancies or missing information in construction documents.
- Communicate with internal teams and customers to resolve technical or pricing questions.
- Participate in sales meetings, technical training sessions, and company meetings.
Administrative & Compliance
- Maintain organized records of estimates, pricing, and project documentation.
- Understand and adhere to company policies, terms and conditions, and product warranties.
- Stay current with industry standards, product updates, and market pricing trends.
Qualifications
Education
- Industry experience may be considered in lieu of formal education.
Experience
- 3–5 years of commercial HVAC estimating experience preferred.
- Experience reading and interpreting blueprints and mechanical drawings.
- Experience performing HVAC load calculations and duct design.
- Knowledge of sheet metal fabrication and HVAC systems.
