What are the responsibilities and job description for the Doorperson position at The Cooper?

As a Doorperson at The Cooper Hotel, you are the first and last point of contact for every guest. You set the tone for the guest experience by delivering a gracious welcome and a heartfelt farewell. With an impeccable appearance, commanding presence, and warm demeanor, you provide service that is polished, intuitive, and reflective of the historic charm and luxury expected at a world-class hotel.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Greet every arriving and departing guest with sincere warmth, eye contact, and personalized attention.
  • Open vehicle and lobby doors, assist with luggage, and offer directions or assistance as needed.
  • Use the guest’s name whenever possible and maintain awareness of VIPs, returning guests, and special occasions.
  • Offer a fond farewell to all guests, ensuring a positive final impression and encouraging return visits.
  • Monitor guest arrival lanes and valet drop-off areas to ensure efficient traffic flow and a pristine presentation at all times.
  • Coordinate with Valet and Bell Services teams to facilitate seamless guest transitions from curb to lobby.
  • Assist in arranging transportation, hailing taxis, and coordinating ride services when required.
  • Ensure guest vehicles are treated with the utmost care and discretion in collaboration with valet team.
  • Provide directions, restaurant recommendations, and brief historical or local context to guests when appropriate.
  • Offer umbrellas, towels, or bottled water during inclement weather or hot days.
  • Maintain working knowledge of local events, cultural landmarks, and Charleston’s historical and culinary highlights.
  • Maintain vigilance over the hotel entrance to ensure only registered guests and approved visitors enter the premises.
  • Report any suspicious activity or security concerns to appropriate departments promptly.
  • Assist in managing crowd control or emergency procedures when required.
  • Maintain a polished, professional appearance in accordance with hotel grooming standards.
  • Keep entryway, planters, luggage carts, and curbside areas clean, orderly, and aligned with Forbes 5-Star visual standards.
  • Anticipate guest needs and discreetly offer assistance before being asked.

Required Skills & Experience

  • Previous experience in luxury hospitality, customer service, or concierge roles preferred; Forbes 5-Star property experience a plus.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to engage warmly and professionally with a diverse guest profile.
  • Exceptional communication skills with a confident, courteous, and discreet demeanor.
  • Ability to remain composed, focused, and welcoming under pressure or during high-volume periods.
  • Knowledge of Charleston landmarks, fine dining, culture, and luxury transportation options.
  • Valid driver’s license required for coordination with valet team.

Physical Requirements

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by a colleague to successfully perform the essential functions of this job:

  • Must be able to stand for extended periods and work in varying weather conditions (rain, heat, humidity).
  • Ability to lift, push, and pull luggage up to 75 lbs using proper techniques or carts.
  • Must be able to walk guests to nearby vehicles, call points, or assistive entry areas as needed.
  • Must be able to resolve problems, handle conflict, and make effective decisions under pressure.
  • Good hearing is necessary for effective communication with colleagues, guests, and stakeholders.
  • Available to work varied shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
