Job Summary
The purpose of this position is to provide safe and quality nursing care in the perioperative environment to patients of all populations. The Registered Nurse will deliver care to patients utilizing the nursing process of assessment, planning, intervention, implementation, and evaluation from admission to discharge. The perioperative nurse will provide care and support to the patient and family before, during, and after surgery.
- Assess patient upon admission to the pre-op area, the operating room, and/or post-op area, and on a continuing basis
- Provide safe, therapeutic quality care to patients by utilizing the nursing process and nursing diagnosis in a timely manner and by setting appropriate priorities. Coordinates nursing interventions to enhance achievement of expected outcomes and to ensure readiness for discharge. Documents interventions and patient’s responses.
- Communicates appropriate information regarding patient conditions to those who require the information including, surgeons, anesthesia, management, and other staff.
- Safely carries out physician’s orders correctly and promptly, documenting all activities.
- Initiates and participates in patient and family education. Assesses learning needs according to patient/family level of understanding and readiness to learn.
- Takes part in pre and post-op phone calls and communicates any problems to the appropriate personnel, documenting activities.
- Leads the surgical site and patient verification during the time out procedure.
- Protect sedated and anesthetized patients by identifying safety hazards such as electrical, equipment, pressure points and by minimizing exposure to maintain privacy and body temperature.
- Expertise in safety principles, asepsis, sterile technique and universal precautions.
- Assesses, anticipates and implements appropriate care throughout the surgical process.
Qualifications and Skills
- Associate's or Bachelor's Degree in Nursing
- Surgery experience preferred
- Current RN or LPN license
- BLS required on hire
- ACLS and PALS within 6 months of hire
- Ability to work independently and in a team environment
- Time management and critical thinking skills
