Overview
Seeking a reliable, warm and energetic personal assistant/mentor to support a young autistic adult in building greater independence, structure and community engagement. This is not a traditional caregiving role. The ideal person will be approachable and encouraging (more like a trusted mentor or “older sibling” figure), while still being dependable, organized and able to maintain appropriate professional boundaries. Some weekend and evening availability needed from time to time.
Responsibilities
- Provide regular check-ins and help create structure for the day and week
- Support attendance at work, appointments, social activities and community programs
- Assist with grocery shopping, simple meal preparation, laundry and household routines
- Help with budgeting, scheduling, paperwork, benefits and basic account management
- Support medication organization by filling a weekly pillbox together
- Encourage exercise, including approximately three hours of gym or physical activity each week
- Provide transportation to activities, appointments and errands
- Help develop executive-functioning skills, including planning, time management and follow-through
- Encourage independence rather than completing tasks for him
- Communicate regularly with the family and other members of his support team
- Gradually reduce assistance in areas where client becomes more independent
Qualifications
- Experience working with autistic or neurodivergent young adults
- Understanding of executive-functioning challenges
- Patient, consistent and able to motivate without being controlling or parental
- Strong organizational and communication skills
- Comfortable helping with both practical life tasks and community engagement
- Dependable, flexible and able to build a positive, trusting relationship
- Experience as a mentor, independent-living coach, personal assistant, educator, behavioral support professional or similar role is helpful
Employment Requirements
Employment will be contingent upon successful completion of all required onboarding and screening, which may include:
- California DOJ and FBI fingerprint-based background clearance
- Live Scan fingerprinting
- Valid driver’s license
- Acceptable driving record
- Reliable transportation
- Current automobile insurance
- Professional and personal reference checks
About the hiring process:
You will be hired through an agency (It is not a Respite or IHSS agency). The agency is a 3rd party Financial Management Service that pays for services for individuals with disabilities.
It is not difficult to complete the hiring paperwork and is similar to being hired at any other caregiver type job (ie., filling out a W4, background check, etc..). You will need to complete a fingerprint Live Scan to be hired. There are benefits such as accrual of sick time and overtime rates.
- You will be paid for your time in completing these extra steps to be hired, once officially hired.
- You will be paid biweekly. You will have the option to be paid via direct deposit or check in the mail.
Pay: $45.00 - $51.00 per hour
